I'm not going to degrade how anyone does not feel safe in downtown Dartmouth but... I live in the area too, and have to say that this sort of thing will happen in any high density city area. Everyone has a right to feel safe in their living area, this is any issue a city has and this area (and Dartmouth as a whole) has been fighting this perception for many years now. All my friends asked if I had a death wish for moving here. In 8 years of living here though, I've only felt threatened once; and this was by a man who was clearly mentally unstable. I shrugged it off and moved on. I'll gladly walk my children around the area as I go to get a sandwich and take them to the park. There's a lot to be positive about here.

I will agree that DT Dartmouth is currently going through growing pains though. Talk to people who live in North end Halifax. You'll likely hear the same thing. It's a community policing issue and ultimately I think that perpetuating (especially in any form of media) it doesn't help the case. Especially in a community alt weekly like the Coast.

Sam Austin was right in defending the area, and I understand that Mellisa Buote feels unsafe. However instead criticizing how detached you feel in a restaurant review, take an active role in the community and make a positive change, and if Sam Austin (a man whom I voted for) wants to change the perception of the community he needs to grow a thicker skin and stop perpetuating this knee jerk reaction we have in this community regarding this perception of it being of "hive of scum and villainy".

Where's the index for the Trailer Park Boys? You'd think that they'd be the biggest given the amount of crying people did when they found out that season 10 might not happen.

I pick up after my dog but I can see why people don't. If I knew I'd get a rise out of someone who had a problem with a little pile of poo, I'd just leave it there too. It's fun seeing people froth at the mouth when there's considerably worse things to see, such as a pigeon shit encrusted statue. But hey! That's okay! Pigeon shit is as natural as the colouring in a Starbucks frap.

What I dislike about the whole gluten-free issue is that it's treated like a diet; as opposed to the disease as it is. People who legitimately have the disease are marginalized by the holier than thou attitudes of those who treat it like it's a way to lose weight or as a way of "clean living". I have the same gripes with vegetarians/vegans.

I'm lactose intolerant, I don't go out of my way to make restaurants and others bow down to my dietary restrictions, as some with "Celiac's" do. Dairy is in everything, just like wheat, and the effects of me eating dairy even in small amounts leave me doubled over in pain at times.

Good luck with the glorified blog, but as a outsider looking in, this is just a transparent attempt to capitalize on the issue just as the Weston's Bakery's gluten free bread with costs 50 cents more for less bread, which is labelled as "gluten-free".

Why is that, when someone says, "just sayin'", they mean; "my opinion is undeniably more important than yours, or anyone elses". This saying, like sarcasm, are a blight on the current generation.

Hey, kinda like complaining about tiny little things on buses in general.

I suggest that you get over it, considering that more and more of the huddled masses cannot afford cars due to a number of reasons, namely fuel and insurance costs. Little things like allowing strollers and people who have to get groceries on the bus are going to be things that Halifax Transit will need to react to better if they want to increase ridership, rather than the current policy of "sorry, teenaged mom, your bottom dollar stroller that you can barely afford is too large for the bus, so you can't take it on here. Walk instead in the middle of winter over poorly maintained sidewalks (or lack thereof) and risk life and limb to get to Wally Mart, which is really only located in an area that is accessible via vehicle, in an area designed for vehicles".

Unless, you're one of those self-righteous students who take up 2 seats because your backpack is full of everything that you need for the day instead of spending an extra 40 bucks and renting a locker in the SUB, which makes a ton of sense. In which case, you're a hypocrite.

    Just sayin'.

As above; the BBB is useless, as a business needs to be a part of the BBB for any complaint to carry weight. Otherwise, its just a cranky phone call.
