Considering the Nova Centre isn't even finished yet I don't know that we can call it a "big, bold failure". I agree that Harbour Drive was a terrible idea but if the only point of comparison between this and the Nova Centre is that they are both large and new, well... this is a really shallow analysis. The fact is, a certain segment of Halifax society has an utterly predictable knee-jerk reaction against any change whatsoever. I really wish the discussion surrounding urban issues could develop into something more nuanced and thoughtful than these tired rants over anything new or, god forbid, more than four storeys tall.
I don't intend to buy a car. I was raised in the city and it isn't my problem if these girls had hick upbringings and somehow associate car ownership with maturity. Be strong OP, find yourself a city girl!
Fantastic article. Really shameful the St. John's project was rejected...have little hope the city can curb sprawl if a modest midrise building on a main street is deemed inappropriate.
Um...I'm not gonna pass too much judgement on the project itself, but to say that it's a "tearing up" or "rape" of the "natural" world is a bit silly.
Did you move here yesterday? The trail has only existed for the past couple years. Prior to that it was a railway. Not so natural.
And if you're so concerned about destruction of wildlife habitat, isn't hypocritical to live in a single-family home in the suburbs? (I assume you do since the trail is exclusively lined with them and as such will never be much of a wildlife habitat.)
By living there you are supporting a form of inefficient, low-density, car-oriented land use. Developers see a market for this and continue to replace forests with more of it.
I guess it sucks that the trail will be closed for two years, but they plan to rebuild it and I'm skeptical it will have any catastrophic environmental impact as a narrow, disconnected right-of-way amid Halifax urban sprawl doesn't make much of a wildlife sanctuary to begin with.
The bus driver might have told many others to "just remember to have it with you next time," at some point they need to actually enforce it or people will exploit that.
It sucks that you were late but the driver is only upholding a really simple rule and doesn't deserve to be called names.
OB, if you want to see "presentations based on science rather than old superstitions," fucking organize one yourself! That's one great feature of the library -- it serves as a meeting place for community groups, including any that you want to set up! Their rates are reasonable.
