There are many donair shops, but only one man is the true King of Donairs. “My father, Leo Gamoulakos, came to Halifax in 1959,” says son and owner Leo Gamoulakos. “In 1972 he invented the donair as we now know it, which is a variation on the Greek gyro. If only I had patented it, I’d be living down south right now,” says Gamoulakos, who has been involved in the business since the beginning. Some things are sacred: “We use our own secret spices, and a special technique with our sauce.”
