Sandwiches were invented by the Earl of Sandwich in 1762 when he had to have something to eat without quitting the gambling table. In 2002 the US Army invented sandwiches that keep without refrigeration for three years. Well, you can do much better than that at Il Mercato where everything is natural. “We use the freshest of quality ingredients,” says assistant manager Lenora McNeil, “and it’s all made to order.”
