Comedy of Errors gets physical

Shakespeare by the Sea’s family-friendly physical comedy wins, inside and out.

To all you people who associate Shakespeare with tiresome readings in Grade 10 English class, I say, "Get thee to The Comedy of Errors". Shakespeare can be fun and funny, as the deliciously preposterous plot of this play demonstrates. Imagine that identical twin brothers (the surprisingly similar Tom Gordon Smith and Steven Heisler) who are masters to twin servants (the aptly twinned Scott Stephenson and Kevin MacPherson) are separated at birth. Then, unbeknownst to each other, they end up crossing paths in the city where one master/servant pair resides. The ensuing misunderstandings make for an energetic physical comedy that the kids will love, and witty, bawdy repartee that adults will appreciate. Weather and time conspired so that I had to see the show indoors, where at times the noise and action was almost overwhelming, but I imagine it would be pitch-perfect in the great outdoors.
