Last year, I was sincerely worried about Debbie Hum, who was sobbing at nearly every council meeting. Sure, council debates can get depressing, but outright crying because someone objects to the second bullet in subclause three in section 428 is a bit over the top. Thankfully, Hum has regained her emotional centre; I haven’t seen her cry in months. She’s getting a bit more involved, and sometimes even in something of a thoughtful manner. As I see it, her biggest vote this year was a vote against the convention centre, which she found to be just too big of a pill for the city to swallow financially.
But those thoughtful moments are still few and far between. A definitive moment for Hum was when she asked council to not make a decision one way or the other on the council size issue and to simply abdicate council’s ability to have a voice by handing the entire issue to the UARB to decide. That pretty much sums up Hum’s approach to councilling lately: less tearful, but still not really engaged.
