District 22 - Reg Rankin

Timberlea - Prospect

Reg Rankin is the sort of fellow who makes the startlingly obvious sound profound, which was humourous the first thousand times I heard it, but is starting to wear thin.

He's another member of the PC cabal that seems to have been the mainstay of Halifax county politics, but he doesn't have the intellectual heft of Hendsbee or Streatch, which is saying a lot.

Rankin sits on the committee working the tax reform initiative. I was at a committee meeting that was trying to deal with the thorny fact that low-income home owners will be hit hard unless there is some sort of relief program put in place to ease the increased burden put on them. Shocking even supporters of the "reform" initiative, Rankin spoke forcefully and repeatedly against giving any tax relief whatsoever to poor people. That is how far to the right this guy is. Enough said.

WHAT WE SAID LAST YEAR 2007 (Grade: C+)

"Rankin’s favourite bus route also has a greater significance outside of council---it was one of the major successes in his area this year. “ favourite bus route is the new 23 (along St Margarets Rd through the Armdale Rotary) because it seems to be doing the job we hoped for---getting people at peak hours down and back in a reasonable time.”

"Remarks: Rankin is no slouch. He represents his district adequately, but is more prone to criticizing council than coming up with anything new to say---but then, that could be a very wide criticism in this council."
