Don’t Worry, It Gets Worse: One Twentysomething’s (Mostly Failed) Attempts at Adulthood

By Alida Nugent (Plume)

Where was this book when I was 23? To women who take time out of their quarter-life crisis to watch Girls and cry-laugh, I highly recommend this self-deprecating memoir. There’s one catch: unless you’re of the belief that giggles are the best medicine, you can’t expect this book to actually help you in any traditional sense. You’ll find it in the humour section. Alida is part of pop culture’s current “it” sector: slightly pampered, middle- to upper-class, young, American women too creative for their own good, struggling to succeed on their own terms. She speaks to the zeitgeist and is a likeable narrator who you’re rooting for before you realize, hey, she got a book deal ---I kind of hate her. But she does drop some nuggets of wisdom, like in “How to Save Money”: “Stop drinking coffee; just let good old-fashioned fear of the unknown keep you up at night.”
