Dr. dFunkt
nüerotik
(independent)
Kamran Abdi—formerly of P.F. Station and Dr. Yellow Fever—has a new project (with longtime friend and collaborator Chuk Wha?) that he calls Dr. dFunkt. While the Dr. has played around town for a while now, this is the first disc and it was nearly three years in the making. Followers of Abdi’s previous work should fall right in step with the funk-disco groove (with the occasional head trip thrown in) that resounds on nüerotik. After the trippy instrumental opener “A.W.O.L.” shakes out the cobwebs, tracks like “Heart Attack” with its retro “you know the girl is bad for you but you can’t help it” aesthetic, the Prince influenced “Wor,” or the steam-rolling drum-machine and synth attack of “Shock Therapy,” will have you grooving naked like it’s 1979.
