Lucy Sowerby never wanted a traditional wedding. So when her partner of almost 12 years, Ron Francis proposed with a ring inside a Kinder egg that had been carefully reassembled, it was entirely unexpected. "I thought at first that the ring was a Kinder prize," says Lucy, "and I said something like 'It's actually kind of nice!' before realizing it was real." Their vision for the day was "a big, awesome party, with a five-minute ceremony near the beginning." The better to focus on celebrating. Eschewing the usual rings, aisle, attendants and white dress, the couple instead opted to invest in live music with the Damien Moynihan jazz trio and 10-piece funk band Rasta Gumbo, a fantastic vintage car photo booth and a lush gold and sapphire colour theme. And everything went smoothly despite the anxious bride. "I was panicking on the way up to the stage for the ceremony and spent the first half of it fighting off a faint," she says. "Ron told me afterward he was tensed and ready to catch me!" Thankfully, she stood her ground. "The relief and happiness I felt after the ceremony was awesome. I finally felt like I could relax." And let loose they did, with lots of food, a custom playlist of '80s and '90s pop between sets and a toonie bar, the couple made sure their guests were having a great time all night. "The funk band was really amazing and everyone was dancing for hours."
