What makes this room your favourite?

It's nice and bright—lots of sun comes in. We opened all the walls up and now the area opens onto the kitchen. We added large windows because it was a southwest-facing bright part of the property. We also added a nice garden door. Now, all the light that comes through the back wall floods through the space. In good weather the space floats right out onto the back deck. We took three dark rooms that were disconnected and opened it all up.

The inspiration

We're builders so the key reason we bought the house was the sunny backyard. It's an old house so it needed a fair bit of work.

There's no neighbour in the back either—there's a kids' soccer field that you can see straight across onto a cityscape. It's quite private and looks onto lots of lights and hills, so that's a nice part of it too.

Key details

There was an old non-functioning fireplace in the living room so we put a propane fireplace in there. We wanted it to be a gathering place when we were entertaining and a warm area to be in. It's nice that when you're entertaining you're not separated from your guests. Even with family—there's an island they can sit at in the kitchen and people can be in both spaces so you're connected. We have two children, so it's nice that when you're in the kitchen you can see and hear what's going on in multiple areas.
