Sam Raimi remakes Army of Darkness in Oz The Great and Powerful, which is far from the worst thing in the world. James Franco is no Bruce Campbell, but does his darnedest as the womanizing carnival cad whose hot air balloon gets swept away to a far off kingdom easily impressed by prestidigitation. Prophecies foretell the great wizard from the sky will save the kingdom from the Wicked Witch, but Franco is more interested in Oz's Scrooge McDuck-like money pit and the land's bevy of beautiful babes (Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and a monumentally miscast Mila Kunis). Acclaim should go to Raimi, who bounces back to the realm of blockbuster films with his trademark flair. Sappy, snarky and more than a little funny, Oz flirts with the quaint joviality of our Wizard of Oz memories by dropping in a smug outsider, and watching him come to believe he might actually be a good person.
