Duncan Ferguson's "On Vacation" shows the ugly side of summer.

NSCAD alum Duncan Ferguson's Unseen Work is perplexing and kind of crude. In one of a summer series "On Vacation" (above), a sunburned man with a farmer's tan and prominent spikes of chest hair frowns out at you from thigh-deep water. In another a man sweats in mauve. The eye chart series almost disappears into shades of blue, smudged with a haphazard feeling---totally displaced from the order of the optometrist's tool. The most appealing painting (possibly due to sheer size) is "Pearly Gates" a bright vision of the Wheel of Fortune's famous stage, but blank, with words yet unrevealed. Unseen Work could be referring to work that's just now being displayed but it also speaks to a theme of what we want to see and what the artist allows us to--- from the unattractive views of summer, to an unordered chart or hidden Wheel of Fortune clue---Ferguson deals in the frustrating subverting of expectations.
