Solving Case 39

You don't need many clues to guess why Rene Zellweger's film stayed on the shelf for two years.

It’s telling that the least implausible thing about Case 39 is the idea that a 10-year-old girl could be a demon. This is a film that presents Renee Zellweger as a tough but tender social worker Emily, a child services organization that allows Emily to temporarily adopt one of her clients and a cop who believes a man can commit suicide by snapping his own neck. All of which would be acceptable if Case 39 rewarded moviegoers’ faith with some frightening moments, but those are as scarce as the sanity of Zellweger’s Emily after she realizes that the little girl she’s taken into her home is an orchestrator of death. Shot in 2006, the film is just now being released in North America. It should have stayed on the shelf.
