The Rakes
Capture/Release
(V2)
Those who know that a rake can be defined as a dissolute person as well as a garden tool are more likely to have the right idea about the Rakes. This rock defies you not to dance. “We are all love machines carrying various genes” from “We are All Animals” is a sample of the wit herein. The London quartet’s debut keeps guitar upfront, in league with a relentlessly creative rhythm section. While incorporating key English elements at will, the Rakes summon the excitement of early B-52s and The Strokes, US bands separated by decades. That the songs tell amusing stories about spies, the daily grind and rough morning surprises is simply a bonus.
