The Raveonettes
Pretty In Black
(Columbia)
The Raveonettes’ Sharin Foo was set to replace The Cardigans’ Nina Persson as Sweden’s quirkiest and most beloved songbird, but then there was the mysterious inclusion of a Raveonettes song in an American K-Mart TV commercial. “Huh?” said fans watching the cast from WB’s Seventh Heaven grooving to “That great love song,” while hocking cheap designer knock-offs. Foo and partner Sune Rose Wagner redeem themselves by returning to their icy posturing and retro-inspired duets, including a boppy New Wave keyboard version of “My Boyfriend’s Back.” Wagner and Foo share singing time--their soft-spoken harmonies and tambourines conjure up an ethereal mood that is more David Lynch road trip than American big box store.
