How I Got Over (Okay Player)

On their last release, Rising Down, The Roots angrily vented. With that behind them, the band reflects on How I Got Over. Midlife and end of life come into view. Black Thought has always closely considered emotions and states of mind rather than narrating action and creating characters. Instead of hiding behind a persona, he contemplates life, what it means to live and do this work. Musically, drummer/producer ?uestlove once again broadens the band’s sound, a scope last heard on Things Fall Apart or Phrenology. “Walk Alone,” the title track, “Right On” (featuring a creepy Joanna Newsom vocal) and “Web 20/20” are the best of the band’s best album in years.
