When Human animals who eat the bodies of other animals, say things like this to human animals who do not eat the dead bodies and products made from the dead bodies of other animals,
'It's my choice, I respect yours, now please respect mine.' What they're forgetting, is that their choice has a victim. Someone suffered and died for that meal.
Non-human animals aren't Some things. They are someones. Please stop killing them and eating them, please go vegan.
So many people call themselves animal lovers, and choose to ignore their suffering and needless deaths, when they eat animals and animal products. Open your eyes. Go vegan.
Passionate Groovy Vegan Chick, You're definitely not alone being a vegan in Halifax. Check out 'Halifax Vegetarians/Vegans' group on facebook. It's a very active group of like-minded people.
To the meat eating people commenting here, who think eating meat and other animal products is 'a personal choice' -- Watch a nonhuman animal bleed to death, after they've been 'humanely' stunned by a captive bolt gun (cows, and pigs), or by an electrical shock in a water bath (chickens) in front of you, and then ask yourself if you still think it's about personal choice. If your meal had a victim, it sure isn't a 'personal choice'.
'To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.' ~Romain Rolland
Pretty amazing new article here:
Why Justice for Animals Is the Social Movement of Our Time
'At the heart of every human rights resolution is a conviction that we, as humans, should not be unjustly imprisoned or suffer torture and other trespasses. There is no sound reason this conviction shouldn’t also apply to animals like the orcas at SeaWorld or the Ringling Brothers elephants. Animals have qualities we find important to the legal rights of humans – like self-awareness, the need for sovereignty, and the capacity for suffering, love, and empathy. We will never fully dismantle the injustices humans suffer without deconstructing the same problems that lead to animal suffering.'
'In fact if one person is unkind to an animal it is considered cruelty, but where a lot of people are unkind to a lot of animals, especially in the name of commerce, the cruelty is condoned and, once large sums of money are at stake, will be defended to the last by otherwise intelligent people.'
Ruth Harrison, Animal Machines: The New Factory Farming Industry (2013)
Some really nice writing here n this story. Colorful, rustic. I'm glad that it was mentioned that nonhuman animals are being killed so these people can make a living, and so us human animals eating the 'meat' from farmed animals can enjoy the taste of the dead flesh in their mouths for a few moments.. Mmmmmm goood. Does it taste like suffering, genetic manipulation, and killing ? BEcause that's what it is.
The reasons people give when you ask them why they think it's ok to take someone's life, and eat the dead flesh, these reasons don't make a whole lot of rational, objective sense. But it doesn't seem to matter too much -- It's the dominant cultural view, after all. Justifying the suffering and the killing, it isn't necessary at all.
I suppose human animals who think it's ok to enslave, and kill nonhuman animals, are pretty lucky that there's not a 'superior' species to us. If they genetically manipulated us into meat, milk, and egg producing freaks -- what could we say to them... what reasoning would be listened to. This superior species would treat us humanely, feed us well, and kill us human animals in a humane manner.
The regular, mainstream media has been doing a crappy job in this story. Thank you Miles Howe and The Coast for some real journalism here. You put The Herald, Global News, and the others to shame, they wish they could do what you have done here.
The people of Nova Scotia are not Michel Samson, Stephen MacNeil, and Margaret Miller. The real inhabitants of the province are the ones living closest to the land. The ones most affected are the ones we should be listening to.
What a horrible time to be investing in Natural gas. A fossil fuel whose carbon footprint is higher than coal, when all methane leaks in the system are taken into account. Nova Scotia is going backwards, when most of the world is looking forward.
