The best part about this whole story is the hypocrisy and/or infantile level of naiveté expressed by people acting appalled at the comments these young men made (in private nonetheless).
Yes, let's all pretend we have always gotten along perfectly with everyone in our lives. (start sarcasm) I personally, no matter how angry or stressed I have been, have never once in my life made any hurtful/offensive comments, just like all of you. Because, as we all know, offensive comments deserve the just punishment of:
1. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt.
2. The opportunity cost of 6-8 years of education.
3. Forfeiture of a career.
4. Ostracization from the very society that cultivated the comments you are being punished for.
Even if I had made offensive comments it would be different because I am not a professional. People designated as "professionals" forfeit their humanity when they choose those careers. As such, if you are a doctor, dentist, lawyer, veterinarian, optometrist, etc. you have no right to a personal opinion, and don't even think about having a sense of humour involving anything that isn't G-rated. You are on the job 24/7, as it should be. I mean, when I make racist/sexist/otherwise offensive joke it's okay, because my job, as a non-professional, doesn't have any ethical requirements and it doesn't matter if people trust me. (end sarcasm)
