Here's a bit of good Canadian literary news for once: The ten winners of the 2017 Atlantic Book Awards were announced last night in a gala ceremony held in Paul O’Regan Hall at the Halifax Central Library. Hosted by CBC Radio’s Angela Antle, the gala concludes this year’s Atlantic Book Festival, which ran from May 11-19 in all four Atlantic Provinces.

Nominees for the 2016 Atlantic Books Awards were announced today, and Nova Scotian authors were well represented. Locals Dean Jobb, Janet Maybee and Sarah Mian are the only writers on the list to be nominated in two different categories, and a new award has been created in honour of Cape Breton's late literary legend Alistair MacLeod.

While trying to encourage local writer and musician Daniel Long (The Cannisters) to publish his poetry, Bijoux Wilcox (Faw Haja) noticed it might be easier for her and her buddies, namely Dylan Jewers and Grant Mitchell, who also all write poetry, to just do it themselves.   "It became apparent that if we all contributed a few things, it would be a chance for a handful of people to get their stuff out there pretty quickly, and it could be an interesting project," Wilcox says.

By the Pen of Zeus: HRM seeks new Poet Laureate

The Halifax Regional Municipality is seeking nominations for the next Poet Laureate, a two-year term beginning in 2016: "The Poet Laureate will be a resident poet, storyteller or spoken word artist who has achieved excellence amongst his or her peers and whose body of work demonstrates connection with and relevance to our citizens." Duties include civic participation and engaging in local literary and social culture, "As an advocate for poetry, language and the arts, the Poet Laureate attends events across the region to promote and attract people to the literary world."

Last night, as a wrap up to the Atlantic Book Festival, the winners of the 2015 Atlantic Book Awards were announced. Hosted by CBC's Stephanie Domet (also a pretty snazzy writer), the sold-out event highlighted Atlantic Canadian literary talent in a range of fields.

The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia recently announced the 2015 shortlist for this year's East Coast Literary Awards, and if you're looking for summer reading, you'd do well to start here. The nominees were heavily vetted by the WFNS jury, who sifted through 62 submitted titles from four Atlantic provinces to come up with these nine books in non-fiction, poetry and fiction.
