Dancing vs. Ice Cream

The kids were safe at last night's giant non-school high school dance - and the teachers at the schools that banned dances are safe, too. They won't have to worry about being blinded by all that crazy close dancing, and they don't have to try to stop it. When I was student teacher, I had the 'opportunity' to chaperone a few dances myself...was stopping the dirty dancers uncomfortable? Um, yeah. But it also gave me a chance to talk to the students and to do a bit of....teaching - about what kinds of things are acceptable in public, and why other things aren't. It's important for teachers to know their students as people, and to see what's really going on with them. One principal suggested that 'ice cream socials' (huh?) would be a safe alternative to dances....they'd also let adults believe that teenagers are living imaginary 50s-style lives that just don't exist anymore.
