There is a fundraising event coming up at the Economy Shoe Shop on May 14th. I think this is ridiculous. An electrical engineer is asking you to give your money so he can buy $10,000cdn worth of cows in order to pay a dowry to his fiancée’s family in Africa. If a family wants to sell their daughter for cows that is their choice, if that is your culture then go ahead, but please don’t ask the people of Halifax to pay for it. There are excellent charities who do work here and abroad that need your money more. A quick scan of some reputable websites quickly shows where your money is desperately needed. If you want to send your money to Africa please consider that you can immunize a child for $100, $25 can pay a teacher’s salary for a month, $150 gives a family of five access to a community water well. $10,000 can immunize 100 children against deadly diseases or employ 33 teachers for a year, or give over 330 people access to water thereby saving lives and allowing children to have an education. Here are a few other examples, there is a near genocide in the Sudan, it is estimated that 10 million people are living on the brink of starvation in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia and Mozambique, there are child soldiers in Algeria, Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Uganda and there are AIDS orphans across the continent. I wish the owners and staff of the Shoe Shop and the performers that are donating their time to this event would have taking a moment to consider that there are thousands of people in despair that could have benefited from their efforts. If you are in a position to give money to fundraising efforts please don’t put your money towards assisting an engineer in his purchase of a dowry but instead consider placing your donations with reputable charities that are in a position to save lives with these valuable dollars.

I am giving my money to someone who needs it
