Pay to pray

A woman I know told me this morning that her son has cancer. I told her I’d light a candle for her at St. Mary’s Basilica. I lit a few candles, including one for this woman and one for my mother, who is also unwell. There was one other man in the church.

A woman I know told me this morning that her son has cancer. I told her I’d light a candle for her at St. Mary’s Basilica. I lit a few candles, including one for this woman and one for my mother, who is also unwell. There was one other man in the church. As I was leaving, he said rudely: “Excuse me, you have to pay for the candles.” I told him I had no change, I would pay next time. I asked him if he works there. He just turned and shook his head as if he was better than me. It’s a good thing I was in a church or I’d have told him to go fuck himself. I wonder what God thinks about me.

Burned at the Basilica
