Over the last twenty odd years, I've lived in London, Dubai, Istanbul, Paris, and Vancouver. All world class cities, in their own way. And having lived in each of these world class cities for between two and five years, I can say with authority that Halifax is not among them. Nor is it ever likely to be.
I was born here. I left after high school to go to university in Ontario. Then I went abroad. I've been back a couple of times a year since then, and about three years ago I came back to stay. And I have this to say to all you people bleating about how Halifax isn't a "world class city": Fuck Off.
If you want to live in a "world class city", there are hundreds to choose from. Move to one. I came back here because I was tired of the world class city shit. Tired of the noise, pollution, pretension, indifference, crime, arrogance, and nastiness. Yes, big cities have a lot to offer. But there is a place in the world for small provincial cities like Halifax. Some people don't want to live in "world class cities", and thank god there are places like Halifax available for us. I love it here, and I love it just the way it is. If you want to live in Toronto, stop bitching about the fact that Halifax isn't like Toronto and move to Toronto. Don't try to turn my home into something I came here to get away from.
