There are so many debates on this board about the friendliness of Halifax, especially when compared to other cities, Toronto being the most popular comparison. People from other parts of Canada/the World hear about how friendly NS is and come here, and then half of them claim that we're all ignorant and rude and jerks. Then you get people who live in NS and go somewhere else to live and discover that people elsewhere are so nice!

I think it all comes down to how you project yourself, and what you show to other people. To all the people who live in a city they think has no manners, and come here and find Nova Scotians rude, it's probably because we are going to act towards you the way you act towards us. Do not expect us to be nice to you no matter what. You come here with a bad attitude, and we're going to give you attitude right back. Come and be nice and friendly, and we'll be your best friends.

And that's what happens to NScotians when they go other places, they show up and are friendly, so the locals there are friendly back, and that makes us think that people in TO are just as nice as they are here, if not nicer.

So if you want people to be nice to you, be nice to them, dont act like you deserve nice treatment and then get bitchy when the locals don't automatically treat you like one of them.

Friendly Nova Scotian
