Where's the Volume Control?

Posted on Thu, Sep 22, 2011 at 11:49 AM

I frequent a particular chain coffee shop on SGR. Typically it's a pleasant place to have a coffee, snack, read, people-watch, browse the web, do some homework, or relax. Most people respect that it's a coffee shop so the volume of people talking is very reasonable and it's enjoyable. The other day your group of six decibal-ignorant extremists came in, grabbed 3 tables, took chairs from other tables (you didn't even ask the people sitting there if anyone was using the chair), combined them all together, and then up went your group's volume... louder and louder in arabic until everyone in the place is giving you looks of disapproval. Yet you ignore them. When I politely interrupted your highly self righteous conversation and asked if you could speak a little quieter, you all looked at me, didn't say a word, and then turned back to each other talking louder than before. I assume it was because I'm a young woman... is that it? So another few minutes pass, you're all still noisy, so I ask the staff if the manager or supervisor could speak to your group and handle the situation. When she came over and asked if you'd like to order some coffee, you responded "No" and then attempted to ignore her. Thankfully she stood her ground and said that the use of the coffee shop is for the patrons to enjoy their coffee, etc. and that if your group did not plan on ordering, maybe you should be on your way. While your other five began arguing at her in arabic, you said "We come to Canada, we pay for university, we put money in your economy, and this is how you treat us. We're not terrorists." That almost made my eyes pop out of my head because I didn't hear her say anything about terrorists. She only suggested you order something or leave. You group appeared very enraged and I wasn't sure if you were going to hit her, or go into a violent rampage. Thankfully you chose to leave shouting christ only knows what in arabic. I hope to never see you there again. You chose to come to Canada for a university education, possibly to enjoy Canada and what we have to offer, but obviously you think you're still back home. —Sip Sip Sip
