Then, today, some complete stranger smiled at me as we walked past one another on the street (first thing in the morning on my way to work). She said hi and asked how I was. I'm not the mopey kind of person, so I wasn't showing my 'screw the world' frame of mind on the outside but I wasn't exactly smiling either (it was early).
Anyway, I said Hi back and gave the best smile I could but it wasn't nearly as cheerful as yours was and I'm sorry I didn't make more of an effort to brighten your day the way you did mine.
I didn't have the BEST day today either but it was certainly better because of that simple gesture. So just goes to show ya, folks, it really is the small things, especially the small pleasant gestures of complete strangers, that makes this world tolerable. Next time I'm feeling up to it (and there will be a next time) I'm going to smile at someone and ask how their day is going. —Just a temporary funk
