And, oh, by the way, I'm white.
I see it on the streets, in lineups, when I order food, at school, at work, everywhere. News outlets here refuse to even touch race issues, UNLESS the story was already broken by another outlet. I have my contacts in media here, so trust me when I say that 99% of racist incidents in the city go completely untold(even though they're news worthy). It's white people protecting white people, because if we say this white person was racist, white people snap shit and go on a massive defence, and act like it was they, themselves who were accused. I've seen first hand how white people(don't forget, the race to which I belong) get all confused, and shrivel up into a ball when confronted with a conversation about racism.
I can't get on the bus without some old man, or lady staring in confusion at me, and my brown girlfriend, for us simply 'being'. I've seen folks openly mock her people, and joke that it isn't racist, because "they're not racist". And don't even mention traveling outside Halifax, to the rest of NS. I've had whole restaurants stare at us, in these small NS towns, that seem to only have white people. It was unnerving, and highly disturbing.
I tried to say it was a coincidence, or use some other excuse, but the truth is, I've seen and heard way too much from here, that people just don't say, in other, larger(real) cities. NYC was nicer to us than Halifax has EVER been, just to put that into perspective. Even the homeless were nicer to us there.
The one thing that REALLY makes Halifax racist, is Halifax's refusal to admit there is an issue with race relations. If you can't admit there's a problem, nothing will ever get better.
Trust me, this isn't an "it's everywhere" problem. It's a "being able to admit there's a problem", problem. I've had people just plain try and tell me racism doesn't exist anymore. #WhitePrivilege —Just some white dude
