Stop giving to street-walking panhandlers

Posted By on Tue, May 21, 2019 at 3:23 PM

Today at the Windsor exchange, there were four panhandlers working all medians and walking into traffic. Stop giving them money! They are a nuisance and a distraction. Last Sunday, going straight on the MacDonald Bridge at the corner of Nantucket Avenue and Wyse Road, a truck in front of me was giving money to a beggar (on the passenger's side) who was walking the middle of the road, just as the light turned green. As the truck took off, this asshole stood in front of me with a big grin, holding me up. Knock it off!

I can’t afford to live here

Posted By on Mon, Mar 18, 2019 at 6:23 PM

I have lived in Halifax for almost 10 years now, and every year, housing becomes less affordable, food costs rise, and I descend further below the poverty line. I realize inflation isn’t a Halifax-based phenomenon, but everything is expensive here, and often overpriced for the quality. I have a professional job, a good education, and I can’t afford to live here anymore. I know it’s not the city’s fault, but the prices of things are out of control.

Why bug the panhandlers?

Posted By on Tue, Mar 12, 2019 at 12:27 PM

What is up with people being rude to the panhandlers? Like the cops! It's up to the drivers if they want to give them money! It's not right—I understand how you cops feel but like I said, it is up to the driver or passenger of they want to give money! But you guys embarrass the panhandlers or give them a ticket you know they can't afford to pay! You should talk to them, not be mean!

Ghetto bread?

Posted By on Tue, Jan 8, 2019 at 12:17 PM

Overheard in a popular gentrified neighbourhood of Halifax, in a hip new shop for privileged folks to splurge on novelty items:
Server: “White or whole wheat bread?”
Dumb white girl decked out in Artizia and Lululemon: “Um, I’ll go ghetto today and get white bread”
Ummm excuse me?

Rant to the racist

Posted By on Tue, Sep 18, 2018 at 12:02 PM

You ignorant, racist, idiot fool! You phoned customer support for assistant with your issue—and when my co-worker answered your call, and started to resolve your issue, with her slight accent, you rudely and loudly say, "English! I want English!"
Have you just recently crawled out from under your rock? I wonder, how many languages do YOU speak? ONE! English, and you haven't even mastered it well enough to understand it when spoken with a slight accent! The lady that answered your call has mastered not one, not two, but five, FIVE languages! Mashi, Swahili, Lingala, and BOTH Canada's official languages, French and English. And SHE could understand every word YOU said! Yet you made up your mind as soon as you heard her accent that you would be an ignorant ass and refused to allow her to take your call.
She answers hundreds of calls each week, and everyone else understands her just fine. Shame on you! It's your loss, because she is one of the kindest, sweetest people I have ever met. Get educated! Multiculturalism is a distinguishing factor that makes Canada great! Canada’s success in integrating disparate peoples from around the globe through its policies and immigration system has been held up as a model for the world. You, sir, do not contribute to that. Now go crawl back under your rock!

Domestic truck?

Posted By on Tue, Sep 11, 2018 at 12:02 PM

Did you know that no one makes a pickup truck in Canada?
Sure, you small-car or take-the-bus-types might be happy, but think about it for moment. The pickup truck is almost iconic for the working class in Canada. We use it at work. We use it at home. We make fences, haul gravel, move grandma's apartment. The list never ends. But we can't buy a canadian truck anymore.

Education vs. teachers' unions

Posted By on Tue, Feb 20, 2018 at 10:02 AM

Teacher unions and education. Do you really know that the quality of education is going to be significantly downgraded? Of course you don’t. Why? Because there is plenty of evidence to suggest teachers incomes do not translate into better educations.

You claim that teachers vote against their own best interest in order to vote in favour of the student's best interests  but I would question whose best interests are they really voting for? Education or teachers unions?

A historian would claim teachers unions are only interested in greedy teachers who have been given steadily increasing pay and benefits for the last 30 years and yet the Test scores remained sub standard and stagnate for 30 years.

Is it in our best interest to bleed a system dry with no tangible benefit? Is it in our best interest to teach to the lowest common denominator so kids do not feel bad about themselves? Can better teaching results be found outside the greedy union dominated public school system, you bet they can. Is it entirely their fault they perpetuate a crappy system, No. But, that is of little consolation for our children whom are branded with low outcome standards.

Teachers unions have little to do with education. By definition teachers unions are selfish entities that do not care about the education of our children and only care about the level of benefits they receive.

Teachers! You are paid well, and you pay your union well, too! It is high time for you to send a clear message to your union.

“No we won't take out students to streets for you. You tell your over priced union lawyers to get off their fat cat arses, and do their fucking job. We expect you to settle this in the board rooms or the court rooms, not on the street like a newly formed teamster union. In case you didn't know, this is our community too. Little Johnny needs an education, now not later.” —Concerned Parent

Equality definition

Posted By on Wed, Jun 21, 2017 at 2:26 PM

I'm all about equality, everyone bleeds red, no one should be more important than another. Yet being on a wait list for school, I have to wait two-plus years, while others are being added to the course, without waiting due to minority. Why can't people let go of the past, live in the present, I don't treat anyone different, but now I'm treated like second class, and have to wait, while you get pushed to the front of the line. Two steps back I guess. —Potential student waiting forever

Co-op housing caters to middle class without children

Posted By on Tue, Mar 7, 2017 at 4:29 PM

Co-op housing in Halifax at one time were community based and were for FAMILIES, not single people and couples. There is a housing shortage in this city and meanwhile single people and couples are living in three and four bedroom co ops and getting reduced rent... If you are one of these types, move on and let someone who NEEDS it move in. —FED UP

Olive branch in one hand and a bloody knife in the other

Posted on Mon, Jan 30, 2017 at 9:00 AM

I can't believe the gall of this government. First they stab the teachers in the back by publicly raising the issue of the professional development trips taken abroad during collective bargaining, then they try to portray themselves as caring deeply about the education system while at the same time undermining those people who work in it day in and day out.

Quite frankly the only skill these people bring to the game is the appalling use of dirty tricks to serve their own purpose and to hell with the consequences. Shame on them. –Citizen appalled at the government

Let's fix it

Posted on Thu, Jan 19, 2017 at 12:00 PM

How about this for fixing public sector compensation:
-Scrap the current MLA pension plan and give them a defined contribution plan. If they're fans of the private sector lets give them a private sector type of pension plan.
-Scrap the teacher's grid and only give increments for seniority. Let them be reimbursed for courses taken and books bought and give them an 'education training dividend' of $750 for every course successfully completed with a cap for the overall number of courses reimbursed over a teacher's career.
-Scrap the current long service award for public sector workers and replace it with a "long term worker dividend" of $365 for every year worked
-Have an informal agreement that unless there is a recession that public sector workers will get at least a half percent raise every year in their wages and a maximum of one and a half percent depending on what the level of inflation is. —Mr. Fix It

Work to rule Trivia

Posted on Fri, Dec 16, 2016 at 4:00 AM

Q: What do you call a teacher that volunteers their time to coach basketball?
A: A Poser. They don't actually give a shit about the sport unless the school board is kissing their ass. —when this is over, I want your resignation.

Teachers long service award

Posted on Tue, Dec 6, 2016 at 10:31 AM

The teachers long service award is too generous. They should have something in the contract that it is the number of years of service multiplied by some dollar figure just like a travel allowance or a meal allowance. They should be getting a silver handshake not a gold one. Just discontinue the old system which is based on income and instead replace it with some reasonable dollar figure. —LetsBeReasonable
