Landlords, get your shit together

I’ve been seriously looking for a somewhat affordable apartment (an impossible task even going way out of my budget) and wanna say a BIG FUCK YOU to every landlord who puts up a December 1st apartment ONE OR TWOS WEEKS away from that date. You know people have to put a notice in, right? If I put in my notice and can’t find a place I’ll be fucking homeless. Also $1,000 for a BACHELOR?! I’m sure being a landlord is stressful SO DON’T BE ONE if you can’t handle it. I make $17 dollars and hour and I’ll be homeless thanks to all you greedy fucks who post apartments for rent a week before you can move in.

Paid criminals

Why are all these dirty cops in the news lately getting suspended with pay?  You got one out there raping women, and another out there committing armed robbery, but they still get to keep their paychequ that comes out of the pockets of taxpayers! The typical police salary in Nova Scotia is 12 percent above the national average—they earn almost $70,000 a year! And they're out there raping and robbing and getting paid suspensions when they get caught. Unbelievable. Meanwhile, the rest of us honest chumps have to live off a measly 30 grand. Maybe I should try a life of crime.

The housing crisis

Posted By on Thu, Nov 7, 2019 at 10:08 AM

To the people in Halifax who own property and are overcharging for said property through unfair rental costs: You are disgusting, putrid trash. It is literally impossible to find a place to live here without spending half or more of your income on lining a landlord's pockets. You greedy scum. And to the politicians who are doing absolutely nothing: people are dying here. We are going without food, comforts, we are at our wits' end. You expect us to work for $11.50 an hour and pay a disproportionately higher amount in taxes than the rich here. We are DYING out here.

To the mom with the fedora at the sports store: We asked you to take your conversation with your teenager elsewhere and your reply was, "Obviously you don't have kids." Guess what? I don't need to have kids to see that you're a spoiled brat. The store was almost empty, you could have sat anywhere to whine and complain about your stupid first-world problems. We were asking you to be a decent human being. Fuck. I wish people like you didn't have kids. And for all the moms out there, that's not an appropriate thing to say to any woman, ever.

Wage slavery is alive and real

Posted By on Wed, Nov 6, 2019 at 9:27 AM

storm-cloud-over-head.jpg
The cost of living keeps increasing every day. I'm talking basics like rent hikes and electricity—screw the luxury $200 cable and internet packages. As a single-person household, I cannot keep myself afloat without working two jobs and setting myself nuts. None of the jobs will pay you a livable wage. Employers only offer temp or part-time jobs without any benefits.

The price of food is ridiculous! I bought a pint of strawberries that were marked down 50 percent, some water and some bread, and that alone came to 15 bucks! Working people have to go to the food banks because their wages don't get them through to the next paycheque.

This is the generation of wage slaves, destined to live below poverty level forever. Boomers at least had the advantage of a housing boom and two-person-income household. If you're single in this province, or worse a single woman earning an average of 23 cents less on the dollar, life is grim and the future is bleak. Employers need to adjust their workers’ wages and salaries to account for the annual increases to the cost of living. Minimum wage is preposterous and pathetic. Even the educated get peanuts.

The only option to survive here is to sell drugs or ass. Or consciously couple up with some no-good partner who cheats and beats. No wonder people drink in public bathrooms and take nose dives off bridges here.

To the Bitch writer complaining about anti-fascists: LMAO! How many truth pills did you take to reach that conclusion? You should really seek some help instead of venting on the internet about your hate towards others. And to The Coast, shame on you for publishing this person's Bitch wherein the person is placing a mental diagnosis on others with no proof. You're publishing abuse and it's embarrassing.

Anti-"fascists'

Posted By on Thu, Oct 3, 2019 at 2:55 PM

illustration-_converted_rev.jpg
Antifa really isn't against fascists, at least no more so than the vast majority of people in western countries whose ancestors fought against them three-quarters of a century ago. Rather they have convinced themselves (and many others) that everyone even remotely similar to the individuals who bullied them or their friends and family members when they were young is a fascist. Why? Because being bullied has driven them insane, and they have an overwhelming need to dehumanize everyone they see as the enemy. It also helps that fascism doesn't exist in this day and age in any significant quantity, and so there are no real fascists to disavow all the people who they have classified as fascists. That said, I would not condone further exasperating the issue by continuing to bully them, nor do I think it is wise to encourage the fulfillment of violent revenge fantasies in individuals suffering from borderline personal disorder, or anyone else's violent revenge fantasies for that matter.

To the drunk panhandler in big-box land

Posted By on Fri, Aug 30, 2019 at 12:15 PM

I sure hope the Editor PRINTS this, since you're too stupid to use the internet! You told everyone that you were getting your knee fixed, and you were going to get a job. But you are a liar. You got your knee fixed, and continue to stand out there in front of the stores at the business park, drinking and being nasty to people, begging for money that you don't really need or deserve. You have done nothing but lie to everyone. Why you are allowed to continue to stand there, when most of the employees at all the stores can't stand you because of the way you behave and verbally bash people, is beyond comprehension. Time for you to grow up and go away, you lying drunk!

"Have a nice day" rings hollow

Posted By on Wed, Aug 21, 2019 at 3:06 PM

Nice sunny day, sitting outside a cafe on Spring Garden, was relaxing until a panhandler decided to stand in front of me and tell everyone to "have a nice day." It's like listening to a parrot. He couldn't care less if you have a nice day, he just wants your change. If people would just ignore panhandlers, there would be far fewer of them. I'm sure the tourists think the whole works of us are losers.

Used to feel sorry for beggars

Posted By on Mon, Aug 5, 2019 at 9:19 AM

An assistant manager at a busy shopping area saw a beggar stick his props (crutches that particular day) under his arm, wander over to his nice car, toss them in and drive away. Since then I don't feel sorry for beggars—they're often duping us all.

One-month housing challenge

Posted By on Wed, Jul 31, 2019 at 2:41 PM

megaphone.jpg
Halifax is in the worst housing crisis in 20 years. If you call up any housing program or shelter, you are put on a list. A certain company bought a lot of low-income buildings with the promise to keep rents affordable, only to dishonour that and have even mothers having to leave and there is absolutely nowhere to go!

Like CB said in "HRM needs rent control," the $535 rent/lights allowance that is given out by Income Assistance used to make you live in infested buildings because the landlords knew we couldn't afford to move. Income Assistance is provided to people who can't work due to physical/medical/mental health problems. Believe me when I say it's not easy to receive that help. Many letters, medical forms and sleepless nights hoping to have your medication covered, only to have to use it to supplement the extra rent you need to pay. Can anyone out there find an apartment for $535 lights included?!?! By the way, that amount has not increased in over 20 years.

The people who drive by the "bums" begging for extra change should be extremely grateful they are going to a roof over their heads, with food and without being bitten all night by bed bugs!!!! No human should have to live in these environments but here we are, and not one paper thinks this crisis and these humans are  worth the front page.

Here is my thought: Why don't the people on the committee that decides what we are allowed live off, try living off it themselves for one month. Walk away from your nice home with your clean bed and the food you can sit down and eat without having a cockroach lurking by, and go pick up your check. Of course you will need to find housing with your $535, and cover damage deposit plus moving expenses plus hook-up fee for lights, etc. Then live off of what's left.

One month is all I ask. For anyone who understands/lives like me—Chronic Bronchitis and the hundreds more—let's push for this challenge. No one will listen to us. We need the evening news and newspapers to put this out there!!!! Cause we are here embarrassed, with low self-worth and have given up, so we stay in our shell. Well, that's if we even have one!!!!!!

HRM needs rent control!

Posted By on Wed, Jul 24, 2019 at 2:04 PM

foot-stepping-on-city.jpg
I am a person with a legitimate disability on assistance, although before you assume I'm a "welfare bum," please know that I work part-time as much as I physically can to supplement my very modest income. I am disgusted with trying to find a reasonable rental apartment in HRM. I'm looking for a simple one-bedroom apartment and I cannot find one for under $750. This is ridiculous.

Assistance only allows $535 for rent and landlords know this. They assume everyone on assistance is a bum who isn't worthy of having a home. They price all their units hundreds above that amount to ensure they will get working tenants. This is discrimination and not fair. Do you think most people on assistance choose to be? They do not. It is not an easy life living on a pittance.

I am doing everything I can do get out of the apartment I'm in now, which is infested with black mold. The place before this was 700 bucks a month and had bed bugs. I had to throw out all my furniture and lost everything! The landlord does nothing when I call for repairs, doesn't show up. But raises the rent each time I call. So that's why I stopped calling him to fix things (no one shows up anyway). I am feeling totally hopeless in this situation and am wondering if I will end up sleeping under an overpass in a sleeping bag.

I have tried to go on the wait list for Metro Housing, but you have to have a zero balance on your power bill first. My power bill WAS up to 500 bucks, but since I have been working part-time, I have gotten it down to 155 dollars owing. So I have to wait longer in this horrible unsafe place with mold until I can be placed on a wait list for an affordable apartment with Housing. I am a little reluctant to go to the only building that Housing has in my neighbourhood that allows people my age into the building (not seniors), because it had bad pipes and the tenants got Legionnaires' disease from living there. Also there is a known pyromaniac in the building who was never evicted, yet continues to set fires inside the building repeatedly.

HRM needs rent control. There needs to be more affordable housing, and landlords and rental companies need to STOP discriminating against people who need social services. We all need a roof over our heads. I am doing the best I can and I always pay my rent on time. I have never defaulted on my rent. I am clean and quiet. I have good references but bad credit due to my circumstances of trying to survive day to day in a world where the cost of living is more than what I am allotted by welfare. Please increase the housing allowance for welfare recipients and please start a rent control program—I know I am not the only one who is in this hopeless situation! I hope the municipal politicians read this and make changes. PLEASE HELP!

Disability Support Program from community services

Posted By on Thu, Jun 20, 2019 at 2:14 PM

world-in-trash.jpg
The program is not doing enough for people with physical and mental health disabilities. If a person tries to go get help on their own, like for the proper therapy in helping with PTSD, well, community services considers going to school work, not therapy, so they make you sign up for employment works! If a person is disabled and can't work because of severe physical and mental health issues, why are they told that if they don't sign up for the program, it could effect their funding? That is the line they use on every piece of paper that is sent to clients. This is a form of intimidation. How is it helping anything?

Where are the 2% and 5% increases from income assistance?

Posted By on Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 11:12 AM

family-in-palm-of-hand.jpg
Why is the government reneging on their promises? We the people in poverty are still waiting, since 2006. You can see it every time a story hits the news about how people living on income assistance are in dire straits and going hungry. When those reporters ask questions about what is going on, the answer they get from government is always the same: "Wait until the employment support and income assistance transformation is completed." and "We will raise the rates and things will get better."

That was 13 years ago. How much suffering can a poor person endure? That response is so old, it has dinosaur crap on it. There were supposed to be increases in 2019, what happened there? Here it is six months into 2019 and nothing has been done yet! What the hell is going on? Is the government lying again? Of course it is!

When does the government ever tell the truth about people living in poverty? Instead they breed discrimination, hate and crime. They blame all people in poverty for the actions of a few. The stigma created is made up of people who have more money than you could imagine, but those are the people that never had to beg for food or spare change. Yes, there are the ones that waste their funding on drugs and alcohol, but let's be real here: Not every person living in poverty is an addict or alcoholic. Some people feel like this is their tax money being wasted, but that is not the truth. We pay HST, property tax and other taxes that most of the population of Canada pays. That should be enough to say to the working class, because they are the ones who discriminate the most!

Who in our present government is helping? People in poverty should not vote in any election, because we do not reap the benefits and most of what we do need is non-existent, so why should we vote if we don't matter? I urge the people in poverty not to vote and let's just see what happens. Let's really find out if we can get the help that every human being in Canada is entitled to.

The people of Canada care more about helping other countries, but when it comes to helping their own people, they complain that we are no-good people who just want to sponge off the government. What is wrong with this picture? Help other countries but not your own?! Shame on the government, shame on the filthy rich who hold most of Canada's wealth and shame, shame, shame on the people of this province. I hope no of you ever have to live this way.
