Regarding these dog days

Posted on Fri, May 29, 2015 at 4:00 AM

To the two beautiful women walking two rather incorrigible dogs up and down Preston street: Halifax is a port city, and you're the anchor. Coming home to you girls is like coming up to breathe. It's an in-between time, but you both have beautiful things in the future—and you bring love into my present every single day. Thank you, thank you, thank you to my lighthouses on land and at sea. —"Lucifer"

Your happy pup

Posted on Fri, May 29, 2015 at 4:00 AM

I was standing at the Spring Garden Road bus stop outside of McDonald’s when you came walking down the road with the happiest pup on the end of a leash. As you walked by, I watched your puppy climb into the lap of a particularly hard looking gentlemen that was sitting on the ground to give him the most joyful love and kisses. Instead of calling your pup to come long, you stopped and, just like your furry friend, you were kind. Without discrimination you chatted happily as the toothless, wild haired man enjoyed the unconditional love of an animal. Your humility was inspiring. —Bus stander

Cutie at Wrap So D

Posted on Thu, May 28, 2015 at 4:00 AM

I'm sure what I'm about to say you are more than aware of and already know. You are seriously good looking and you have the best moustache around town. Catching a glimpse of you when I make my weekly market trip brightens the day. Even though I can't eat anything at Wrap So D, walking by there always makes me smile because it's always so lively, upbeat and positive and who doesn't love that. —Secret Market Admirer

Where's the positivity?

thumbsup_black.jpg
I get it. Its tough out there. Like real tough. I'm also prone to sad chats that consist of despairing questions and shaking fists. I say, "Where can we go from here? Things are really getting worse and worse," and even on occasion "$%& this province.” But we need to find a silver lining to this dark story that we keep telling each other. I think we've got to find a reason to fight, to stay, to make it work. And I don't think our reason for caring is going to come from outside opportunities, or the established folks or the experts. I think it has to come from our own individual little changes, our own smiles and our ability to find moments of generosity, creativity and ingenuity here. I'm not saying that we should ignore the issues. Please don't ignore the problems, or the corruption or the injustice. Let's not get apathetic. Instead of pointing my finger at your youth, or your pension or your politics, I just want to hold you when it gets rough. Because I like this place...you could even say I love it. And I really want to stay and I really want to stay here with you. —Precarious Optimist

Halifax Tulips

Posted on Wed, May 27, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Oh how beautiful all the tulips and daffodils are! What an excellent splash of colour they add, especially to some unsightly spots around the city. Thank you to all who put the time in to plant them! —More, more!

A blue note

Posted on Wed, May 27, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Sitting at the back of the 7 heading downtown along Gottingen, I was reading Maggie Nelson's /Bluets/, when I noticed you, in a bright blue jacket, talking about jazz with your friend across the aisle. Maybe I was marked by the essay, finding the blue in the world jumping out at me, but you seemed kind and bright: I wanted to ask when I might catch your next gig, but you disembarked before I had the chance. Maybe I'll see you some other foggy morning. —kind of blue

JUST fabulUS!

Posted on Tue, May 26, 2015 at 10:34 AM

I stumbled into Just Us Coffee barefoot like a hobo carrying a large red coffee of their competitors. I explained how I had just broken a strap on my sandal and asked if they had any tape? Smiling and welcoming, they promptly produced a large roll of silver duct tape. And allowed me to use their pristine bathroom facilities even though I wasn't a paying customer. And though I was clearly a patron of their competition. I escaped to the bathroom and fixed my sandal quickly so that I could board the Metro Transit bus back to Darkside without shame. Well a small amount of shame, from having had to McGyver my shoe with duct tape. But fuck it. Thank you so much, Just Us Coffee shop on Spring Garden, youi guys saved my ass. You rule! —Next time, I'll stop in for a cup.

Longest month of my life.

Posted on Tue, May 26, 2015 at 10:33 AM

I never thought I'd love a woman, but that is who you are. When I finally understood it, I thought we'd come far. Your family will never let you be you, their shame sickens me - but worse it sickens you, and put us at constant odds. So I left. BECAUSE I love you. So of course I miss you, and this has truly been the longest month of my life. You're still my best friend, why aren't you calling me? —Annie-and-me-are-meant-to-be

To my best friend

Posted on Fri, May 22, 2015 at 4:00 AM

You are moving on to bigger places and bigger things soon. I just want you to know how proud of you I am and how special you are to me. Thank you for all the adventures and laughs (seriously, I have never laughed so much which anyone else). You may have nearly given me bald spots from noogies, but you'll always be my favorite. —Girl Who Quietly Loves You

The girl on 4

Posted on Fri, May 22, 2015 at 4:00 AM

You work reception in the VG, at a clinic I’ve had to go to every month for a long time. I pretty much hated it until you started working there. You are so upbeat and sweet, I actually enjoy waiting a long time for my appointment now because it is great just watching you interact with people. You have a 100-watt smile and your laugh seems to echo all through the halls, making a place that I used to dread a little bit brighter. It’s obvious that you love your job, so I just wanted to say thanks for the way you are. You give a gravely ill guy something to smile about. You will probably never read this, but I'm hoping you might, because you should be told every day how much of a difference you make. —Hodgkins

Love not hate

Posted on Thu, May 21, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Lately I've been noticing a new trend in hate speech amongst Halifax and North American media in general. You can see it walking down the street, the glares people give you, the conversations being had outside of the queer community. This issue is hate towards people who are transitioning from gender, people who are gender queer, gender non-conforming. Basically this issue of hate spans all new gender politics, including the addition of other forms of discrimination. And so my love goes out to all the people I know and don't know who are currently transitioning or have transitioned. You are valuable to me and I love you and will support you any way I can. tldr- noticing hate related to new gender politics, giving love to beautiful humans the hate is directed towards. —Alfie
