We met a while ago when I was home for a visit. I didn't know then that I'd become so smitten with you over the months to come. Although we live in different places, I keep hoping you'll give this a real try.

Happy for what you did!

I worked the advance polls before the election, and not only was I surprised at the amazing turnout, I was happy to see it as well. What really made my long days better was seeing parents bring their children with them to vote and encouraging them to be part of the process—letting them put the ballot into the ballot box, for one thing. Making kids see the voting process shows them how easy it is to change things. It was gratifying to see a whole new generation of voters getting excited about voting, even it if it way off in their future. I often don't have a lot of hope for the younger generations but this experience gave a little back. Thank you parents and first-time voters as well!

A watershed moment

I was so happy to be back on the east coast. First time back in a while. I was loving the boardwalk and the smell of the ocean, but was so hot in my airplane suit and tie. You were promoting how clean our water is, so I thought I’d test it out! You must have thought I was drunk when I jumped off the dock. You were nice enough to give me paper towels to dry off, though. Thanks for making my first day back one for the books.

PS: I think I’ll make this a new routine.

Kawhi Leonard forever

Yes Raptors, goddam YES! Making history with the win, and sending the Warriors home in style. We the north!

To celebrate I want to get a tattoo of Kawhi holding his two trophies. It's a great idea now—but he might not even be in Toronto next year. Am I gonna end up with regrets like Steve Kerr?

No longer a slave

Posted on Mon, Oct 24, 2016 at 4:00 AM

There are several countries in this world where apostasy is still punishable by death. Its a touchy subject that people in certain communities don't really talk about openly. I come from one of these countries and a very strict one. I've lost my home and my family since coming out as agnostic. I am nothing more than a traitor in their eyes. But I do not feel like I have lost my life. I pretended long enough to make it here safely and I feel hopeful for my future. I just want to thank this country and the people in it for their love and support. Thank you for letting me have a proper education. The freedom to move around without the permission of my father. For letting me be in a place where I don't have to live with constant anxiety, shame and fear. And eventually the option to choose who I want to love instead of it being chosen for me. I love you Canada. —Ex M

The last night of the Hip

Posted on Thu, Aug 25, 2016 at 4:00 AM

After some confused messages and a rough start, I finally set out for the live streaming at Grand Parade. Donning my messenger bag of beer and a few 'smokes,' me and my company walked around a city filled with people going to-and-from the show, or bars in which every one of had the concert on. We made our way to the center of the crowd, trying to keep close to mainly adults as I sometimes forget kids are at rock concerts too, and don't like smoking around them. But very quickly it didn't matter—a few drinks in and I was swayin’ with the crowd, a sort of hippie-ish fumble as I couldn't dance my way out of a hat. It was truly a scene. The feeling of peace and a mutual adoration for the music. A sense of pride, for this is “Canada's Band,” and almost everyone has a Hip song that commands a “Shut up! I love this song!” or a “Turn that up!” The performance was awesome, the crowd, a sort of comforting sea of kindred souls, and roaming the streets almost traffic free was a perfect end to the evening. Nice job Halifax and CBC. And thank you to the Tragically Hip, for so many great songs. —New2Halifax
