Tire hero to the rescue

I was scrunched up, wrestling with the tire gauge and valve stem at the gas station. A young woman walked by and asked "All OK?" She saw from my face I was struggling. She plopped right down and joined in wrestling. I figured she worked there. After some minutes filling the tires and getting weird gauge readings, she said she had one at home. She didn’t work there, she was just walking by! She brought back tools and a good gauge, and we finally got the right amount of air in those recalcitrants. Thank you wonderful person! It WAS the valve stems! Welcome to Halifax, we are so fortunate to have you here. You will be an awesome nurse!

To the guy we met on our first night of vacation: It was heartwarming to hear about your adventures as a father. You seem to put a lot of work into giving your son the best life. Thanks for telling us about the sloth exhibit and for inviting us to crash his birthday party there. It was a highlight of our trip!

Nothing compares to you

A steady stream,
Of music playing,
Almost on the daily.
I miss the serenity of that.
Chance encounters,
With interesting strangers,
Finding common ground,
At after-parties in Halifax.
Whether it be,
Day or night,
In the east.
I never once felt lonely.
There is depth to people,
Genuine kindness and empathy.
You just gotta be open to that.
Love and miss you Halifax.

Keys to kindness

Saturday morning at the Joe Howe Superstore I locked my keys and cell in my car. I had my daughter with me and we were on our way to go camping. I was very distressed and asked this guy if I could use his cell to call someone to help me. When I couldn't remember anyone's numbers because, well, they're all in my contacts, he drove us to my apartment to get my spare keys and then even drove us back to the car. I just wanted to say thank you so much. If you ever need anything you know where I live ( if you can remember lol). I hope you had a good time at the wedding you were going to, and that there were not too many cow patties.

You are the adorable person who sat across from me on the bus and then across from me at the Dyke and Trans March. Were we making eye contact? I genuinely can’t tell! My vision is very bad! Either way to you and anyone else who was there, thank goodness for you and your fabulous queer selves. Thank you for creating that community space and for giving me the opportunity to unapologetically dream and chant and ogle. I hope you went home dreaming of a marvelous future and the ways you’ll fight for it. Don’t lose any of that hope or that bitterness. And if you see me again, please say hi!

A watershed moment

I was so happy to be back on the east coast. First time back in a while. I was loving the boardwalk and the smell of the ocean, but was so hot in my airplane suit and tie. You were promoting how clean our water is, so I thought I’d test it out! You must have thought I was drunk when I jumped off the dock. You were nice enough to give me paper towels to dry off, though. Thanks for making my first day back one for the books.

To the shark-suited guitar-playing guy and his amazing entourage on Inglis Street on Bluenose marathon Sunday: thank you! Your singing and dancing gave me a well-needed boost to climb that hill during the marathon. It cheered me up for several kilometres and I still smile just thinking about it! You guys rock!

Long Distance Love

Posted By on Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 10:15 AM

After a few years away from Halifax, I've only grown to love it even more. I've talked about Halifax so positively and extensively that almost every single one of the friends I've made in Vancouver is dead-set on visiting. The Seaport Market, bike routes in Dartmouth, the Frog Pond, DeeDee's, Trident Coffee, the Hydrostone... People keep asking if I'll miss Vancouver, but how could I when I'm heading back to Halifax?

Cure for my landlocked blues...

Posted By on Tue, Apr 30, 2019 at 1:21 PM

Halifax is the best cure for my landlocked blues. Like many, I've moved west for work and made a good life. In a few weeks, though, I'll be back for a short visit. Point Pleasant Park, the Citadel, Spring Garden and the market are where I'll be first. The salt -inged air, friendly faces and fun is what I'll try to soak up most in My Nova Scotia Home.

CSA all the way

Posted By on Tue, Apr 30, 2019 at 1:18 PM

Every week, every single week, for the past four months (and counting!) you take time from what I can only assume is an incredibly busy farm life to come into the city. You hand-deliver not only your organic produce, but also your eggs, fruit and pasture-raised meats to my community. Everything is grown with such love—I swear I can taste it in every bite. My family and I wait for our box of goodies to roll in from Port Williams to Bedford. Opening our share of vegetables every week is beyond exciting. Thank you for taking such good care of the land you grow on, the soil you nurture and the families you feed.

Home sweet home

Posted By on Tue, Apr 9, 2019 at 11:19 AM

Really good ice cream! Visible soil! Cool events! The Coast! Halifax, I missed you so much. No matter how many new buildings have popped up, how many new craters have appeared in the ground, and how many people have up and left for Toronto, you are still the place for me. I am so happy to be home again, and not just because it means leaving a particularly dull neighbouring province.

Concrete jungle

Posted By on Tue, Jan 22, 2019 at 12:40 PM

Thank you to the workers at Purdy's Wharf who, at 3am, had to deal with me stepping in their wet cement. I had had a long night and apparently became careless and disoriented in your work zone. You were so forgiving and friendly—and one of you sweethearts even cleaned off my sneakers with a sponge. Total angels! Thank you!

Transtastic

Posted By on Mon, Oct 29, 2018 at 4:30 PM

To the fine people of this city: I just want to say thanks to you for being so accepting of transgender people. Since I've started my transition, everyone I talk to about it has been fantastic. I've felt so supported, even by strangers. I currently still present male on a daily basis and nobody second guesses me when I tell them I'm trans, which I really appreciate. Probably the only bad experience I've had was when two gay males told me I was ruining my body.
