Home sweet home

Posted By on Tue, Apr 9, 2019 at 11:19 AM

Really good ice cream! Visible soil! Cool events! The Coast! Halifax, I missed you so much. No matter how many new buildings have popped up, how many new craters have appeared in the ground, and how many people have up and left for Toronto, you are still the place for me. I am so happy to be home again, and not just because it means leaving a particularly dull neighbouring province.

Concrete jungle

Posted By on Tue, Jan 22, 2019 at 12:40 PM

Thank you to the workers at Purdy's Wharf who, at 3am, had to deal with me stepping in their wet cement. I had had a long night and apparently became careless and disoriented in your work zone. You were so forgiving and friendly—and one of you sweethearts even cleaned off my sneakers with a sponge. Total angels! Thank you!

To the fine people of this city: I just want to say thanks to you for being so accepting of transgender people. Since I've started my transition, everyone I talk to about it has been fantastic. I've felt so supported, even by strangers. I currently still present male on a daily basis and nobody second guesses me when I tell them I'm trans, which I really appreciate. Probably the only bad experience I've had was when two gay males told me I was ruining my body.

Thank you for the thanks! My niece and I were having a day out and stumbled across the Canon. She was so stoked (and so I am I honestly) to see your thanks online! You made a 13-year-old feel like a superstar. It was the best teachable moment I can recall in a while!
Thank you!

To Mister Fix-it

Posted By on Tue, Sep 25, 2018 at 12:07 PM

My friend and I were in a tight spot when the footrest on her wheelchair broke, making it unsafe for us to move and try to take the city bus home. We tried fixing it. We called various cabs with no luck. We were at the end of our rope when you came along. Within a minute, you were able to snap on the footrest while I held up her legs, and taking only a hug in payment, you left and we got home safe. We can't possibly thank you enough and we'll always remember you as the superhero the Mister Fix-it who came to our aid!

Wave of Emotion

Posted By on Mon, Aug 20, 2018 at 4:20 PM

My own damn fault: I wore my prescription sunglasses into the surf on Natal Day Monday at Rainbow Haven. I got caught by a wave and the glasses were torn from my face. My girlfriend and I looked for the rest of the day, trying to spot them on the beach or in the water. Without any expectation, I alerted the lifeguard and gave her my cell number.

You found them—black prescription Oakleys with a purple stripe —and took them to her. She texted me just as I was leaving the beach. Shock and delight!

Thank you so much for that. You were my Natal Day miracle.

You have my heart, Halifax

Posted By on Sat, May 19, 2018 at 12:00 PM

It's been two and a half years since I packed up my life and moved to Toronto—but Halifax, know that you're missed greatly! I still find myself on the coast website from time to time, living vicariously through those who call the ocean's playground their home.

Maybe i'll be back someday, but until then, know that you're truly missed. —Scotia Girl In The Big City

It's been a long, long, long time

Posted By on Fri, Dec 8, 2017 at 12:28 PM

Hey, guys. Missing Halifax and all my dear friends there, all the lovely communal houses, potlucks, open mics, radical gatherings, progressive communities working towards the greater good, great music, community gardens, winter, summer, the Atlantic Ocean...hard to believe I've been in NZ for a year now. Hope any of you who know me know who this is! Sending much love from the other side of the world. I have not forgotten you! —Brown Curly-Haired Shorty In NZ

You are all so lucky

Posted By on Sun, Aug 6, 2017 at 12:00 AM

I just want you all to know how lucky you are to be in Halifax this summer. I've been gone for three months now, and while filling the Best Of noticed that I haven't been there for any festivals, new resto openings, or numerous other events. This is such a special place and you all make it fantastic, I miss this place every day. Breathe deep on the waterfront and get a slice of 'za for me won't ya! —Salt Air Deficient BOY

Hospitable Haligonians

Posted By on Fri, Jun 16, 2017 at 12:00 PM

I work in tourism, and today I had multiple passengers from a certain regal cruise ship tell me how friendly of a reception they've received from the people of Halifax, and that they've never met such kind people before. Way to go, NS! —Proud of my city right now
