The Twitterverse discusses Sue Uteck

[The following conversation took place on Twitter, Friday morning, just as and after Halifax councillor Sue Uteck appeared on CBC's Information Morning. Uteck and councillor Gloria McCluskey had been invited to appear on the show to respond to my article on Halifax's "tax reform" proposal.

The Twitter conversation is all over the place, with dozens of people taking part (this is an abridged part of it), and can be somewhat inside-baseball, but I think, taken as a whole, the conversation is exploring some very interesting issues. I publish it below, mostly as a curiosity, but maybe it'll provoke some further conversation.]

TwitCoast Uteck on CBC: Bousquet doesn't know what he's talking about- he doesn't pay attention @ meetings, twitters all through them.

cr8tiveCandy Sue Uteck on CBC 1, re: @twitCoast : "This is a guy that just Twitters constantly and doesn't pay attention." Some ppl just don't get it.

karenneves @cr8tiveCandy Yup. @TwitCoast is the most incisive Council coverage going. Gotta pay attention to be that good.

TwitCoast @WayeMason It's a shit or get off the pot moment- they either kill it now, or they keep the ball rolling. It's the old council momentum...

Fouge @wayemason @cr8tivecandy @twitcoast thanks for pointing out the things you do. I wrote Sue Uteck about fear, and how it is rooted in ignornc

TwitCoast: @WayeMason ...1st: you don't have to commit, just more study. 2nd: "we've put 3 years into this, you can't just stop."

WayeMason RT @TwitCoast 1st: you don't have to commit, just more study. 2nd: "we've put 3 years into this, you can't just stop." #nspolitics

Fouge Thus my comment earlier re: @downtowndawn as it relates to @twitcoast should be clear. Tim's tweets - public service. Dawn's tweets – disrvc

cr8tiveCandy @TwitCoast I know, 'taxes' is one of those words that easily turns into static in the ear. LA LA LA 'taxes' NOT LISTENING.

TwitCoast: @cr8tiveCandy Unfortunately, folks don't have much in a background understanding of how political ideology comes through in taxes

TwitCoast: @cr8tiveCandy There are HUGE social justice issues behind all taxes. Different approaches to "fairness"

statsgirl Is the municipality starting a rhetoric war with @TwitCoast ? First Beazley, now Uteck questioning the integrity of Coast journalism...

statsgirl Me thinks the HRM municipality doesn't like having such an attentive watchdog like @TwitCoast, bringing their shenanigans to the public...

Fouge @twitcoast I expect this stems from the tax reform piece you wrote about recently?

CashGordon @TwitCoast That's some MacKay-style character assassination.

TwitCoast: People can agree w/ me or not, that's fine, but it's absurd to suggest my twittering of council makes me less informed.

davidrcroft @TwitCoast Yup, unfair to dismiss you in whole due to tweeting, but it must distract you somewhat from the conversation, doesn't it?

TwitCoast: @davidrcroft No. For 1, I record the entire meeting, and check that when writing articles. 2, I read lots of documents, etc. Not just talk

concreteorange @TwitCoast I agree...and all of us Twits will too, but you must admit that to the uninitiated "twittering" sounds frivolous.

PatBateman_ @TwitCoast emo

concreteorange @TwitCoast It's too close to the word "flittering" . They should have called Twiiiter "Think"

inspiredeggs @TwitCoast your council Tweets are better than just taking notes or recordings... they are engaging and insightful.

giftedtypist @TwitCoast Would Sue Uteck say: newspaper reporters don't know what they're talk about, they scribble notes through council

BayOfFundy @TwitCoast I totally agree, her observation about twitter was just weird....

TwitCoast: @giftedtypist Yes, she would. Easy to attack the media, when they shed light on what you'd rather not have in public spotlight.

huskermould @TwitCoast councilors reading twitter while council is in session seems more concerning...

JayGilmore @TwitCoast I think the fact that you go to the CC meetings and "Listen" vs pushing agenda makes you more informed.

TwitCoast: @huskermould I'd guess about1/3 of the councillors are following my tweets, at meetings.

davidrcroft @TwitCoast Don't get me wrong, you do an excellent job. My point was the inability to both tweet and pay attention - maybe that's just me.

christinacopp Agreed. RT @huskermould: @TwitCoast councilors reading twitter while council is in session seems more concerning...

rickconrad @TwitCoast @davidrcroft I think being an experienced beat reporter helps. Your ear gets trained to filter, so you can do both.

johnmbennett @TwitCoast couldnt agree more. It seems that Sue Uteck is the one misinformed

rickconrad @TwitCoast @davidrcroft Plus, I think the live-blogging/tweeting is almost like a first draft in itself

TwitCoast: @rickconrad The question is this: are people more or less informed & interested because of the tweeting?....

Fouge I want an @twitcoast T shirt.

MerlinRPM @TwitCoast FWIW I love your live tweets from the council meetings. Keep it up!

huskermould @TwitCoast good to know your insight is better than the actually council meeting. Council should be happy people are engaged in council.

thinksin3rdprsn RT @TwitCoast: Uteck on CBC: Bousquet doesn't know what he's talking about- he doesn't pay attention @ meetings, twitters all through them.

giftedtypist @rickconrad @TwitCoast Tweeting's just like taking notes - Uteck's comment is like saying journos aren't paying attn cuz they're note taking

TwitCoast: @rickconrad ...I trust people to explore the issues and form their own opinions, once they've been connected to it.

HRMParent @TwitCoast Love your council meeting tweets - have gotten a few people into twitter just cuz they want to read them!

huskermould most folks would say the best part of council meetings is @twitcoast tweets. councilors reading @twitcoast during sessions would agree....

lkmisztela @TwitCoast Really enjoying the council tweets. Wasn't as int in council b4, but it's more relevant to me in small bite w/sense of humour. :)

huskermould I nominate @TwitCoast as the unofficial secretary/humorist for HRM council. All those in favor..

davidrcroft @TwitCoast More informed *and* more interested. A lot of us delight in your council tweets and subsequent coverage of council shenanigans.

rickconrad @giftedtypist @TwitCoast totally agree

HeraldEditrix @TwitCoast Tweets = putting down info in an understandable form. No more of distraction than note-taking (BTW I'm an ex-city hall reporter)

rickconrad @TwitCoast I think it totally engages more people in council. The proof is in the popularity of your tweets

brightwhite @davidrcroft @twitcoast, your live tweeting makes the very idea of HRM council palatable and even enjoyable.

HeraldEditrix @TwitCoast Plus, I think tweeting council opens up the meetings to an audience who may not otherwise folo city business AND . . .

HeraldEditrix @TwitCoast ... whets ppl's appetites for full story in print or on web. Which would make ur tweets the amuse-bouches of council coverage.

dev0kan @TwitCoast not only do you show up for council meetings, you do your best to keep the rest of informed in an often humerous way.

krisp131 Curious to see where the Sue Uteck vs. @TwitCoast whaaambulance ride goes next.
