Return of the Grafton Seven

Posted By on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 4:00 AM

Well, not exactly. Yes, there will soon be a lounge once again at the location of Seven Wine Bar (1579 Grafton Street), co-owned by local restaurateur Costa Elles who was in charge at Seven. Right now it doesn’t have an official name--- though the Facebook Group identifies it as The New Lounge on Grafton and gives these details: “this hip, sexy lounge invites patrons who love the nightlife to come and stay for the evening and take pleasure in one of the signature cocktails while lounging on the inviting sofa style banquette seating”---nor does it have a firm opening date. April 29 looked like a possibility, but with renovations still ongoing, it could be May before the doors open. General manager Khephra Ahounou says it will offer “small plates,” and no dance floor. “We’re aiming for a more mature crowd,” she says. She understands that Seven may have been intimidating for some, so this will be a more casual joint, somewhere that will appeal to the “five-to-seven crowd” and the “six-to-two crowd.” “I do like the word ‘swanky’,” she says. Watch this space for more details as we have them.

Update, April 20, 2010, 4:07pm

The opening date remains in the ether. According to Ahounou, best we can tell you: "Coming soon."

The new Palaces

Posted By on Sat, Apr 10, 2010 at 4:00 AM

In the BLIP it’s known as the Indian Buffet Palace (8 Oland Crescent, 405-8909), but the second location in Dartmouth is simply India Palace and can be found at 972 Cole Harbour Road (444-8252). As with the Bayers Lake location it offers a daily all-you-can-eat buffet for lunch (11:30am-3pm, $11.99) and dinner (5pm-9pm, $13.99). Open Tuesday through Sunday, inquire with the establishment for catering and party reservations. Speaking of new locations, Sushi Nami Royale has a third joint, following their Dresden Row and Clayton Park successes. You can find them now in Dartmouth Crossing at 149 Hector Gate, 209-5580.

Spartan Closes, Louly’s opens

Posted By on Fri, Apr 9, 2010 at 4:00 AM

A fixture on Quinpool for over four decades, the Spartan Restaurant (6403 Quinpool Road, 429-6858) will close on Monday, April 12. “Right now we’re going to take it easy,” says co-owner Maria Kyreakakos about her and her husband Nick’s retirement plans. With help from their son Peter, they’ve run the popular eatery on the corner of Oxford and Quinpool for 44 years. “Later we might take a trip to Greece. We haven’t decided yet.” She says she’ll miss her customers, who she calls “the best,” especially the younger folks who kept the place humming. “Lots of university students came through here. I treated them like my own boys.”

The business has been sold to the family of Roqaya Abel Hameid. Following renovations, Hameid and her parents will open a new casual eatery with an Egyptian theme called Louly’s Restaurant: Authentic Egyptian Cuisine. “It will have a family environment,” says Hameid, who says to expect traditional Canadian breakfast items along with Egyptian and Mediterranean dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including seafood, meat dishes and plenty of vegetarian selections. “There’ll be everything for everyone on the menu,” she says.
