There’s some good news for all those people who drunkenly amble their way up Pizza Corner looking for a quick late-night fix—there will soon be a new, healthier alternative to pizza and donairs. Noodle Nook will definitely be opening its doors beside Sicilian Pizza this month, according to its owner, Ron Lovett. Lovett says the Nook will sport a bright and funky decor and offer eight main Asian plates, with four styles of noodles and meats, including chicken, pork, tofu and shrimp. “The kitchen is built, the place is painted. All we need to do now is a test run of the menu,” says Lovett. The Nook will not feature plates, but will instead provide its customers with Chinese take-out boxes (like the ones you see in the movies all the time, but never in real life). The official launch date is tentatively set for September 11. And if late-night gorging isn’t your thing, don’t fret: the Nook will have delivery, too.
This year marks the first full year that Dalhousie University will offer its students a universal bus pass. The system has been in place since January, saving students some $300 dollars a year (the yearly fee is included in students’ tuition). “The majority of the response has been very positive,” says Charles Crosby, a media relations manager with Dalhousie. “The U-PASS came about by popular demand. Surveys were conducted and 86 percent of students wanted it.” But not everyone is completely happy with the new system. While part-time students and post-grad medical students are exempted from paying the fee, students who do not use the bus or who live outside the bus route are not so lucky, according to Ezra Edelstein, Dalhousie Student Union president. “There’s been a mixed reaction to it,” says Edelstein. The passes can be picked up at the DalCard Office at 1443 Seymour Street (that goes for King’s students, who join the system this year, too).
Those looking to immerse themselves in a little local history and sample some genuine Acadian cuisine might want to visit Cafe Grande Desert. The restaurant, located in the community of Grand Desert—one of five villages located on a 10kilometre inlet of the Atlantic Ocean—will open its doors on September 15. The menu features a variety of local favourites, including steamed mussels and clams. The restaurant will also boast several baked items and Acadian souvenirs. Grand Desert was populated by Acadian prisoners released from Halifax and Cape Breton military prisons way back in 1763. Their descendants and other French settlers make up most of the present day population. The restaurant is about just east of Halifax at 6502 Highway 207.
Salute your soup
A new gourmet soup shop, The Soup Sergeant, will be reporting for duty around the first week of October in the Donut Machine’s old space on Spring Garden Road. “We are very excited about being located in a central business hub of downtown Halifax,” says co-founder Chandra Pottle. “Our food will be targeted at the downtown business market as well as the local student population. All of our recipes are made with natural, healthy ingredients. We’re healthy and affordably priced.” In order to keep things fresh, The Soup Sergeant will be constantly rotating its selection of soups, with panini sandwiches and gourmet salads available on the side. “We’ll primarily be a take-out venue,” says Pottle, adding that The Soup Sergeant is expected to spread to several other locations in Halifax over the next five months. Seinfeld fans be warned: no Soup Nazi jokes will be permitted in the premises.
The (American) eagle has landed
Despite the unfortunate news this week that the Halifax-based Canjet will be scaling back its services to focus on charter flights, there is some more positive news in the skies around Halifax. New York-bound travellers will soon have one more daily flight to pick from thanks to American Eagle, a regional affiliate of American Airlines. The company announced this week that it will begin service between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Halifax International Airport. Beginning on December 14, American Eagle will operate one daily round-trip flight between the two cities. This is in addition to the two daily round-trips between New York’s JFK International Airport and Halifax currently offered by American Eagle.
Next of Kinh?
After more than 20 years of service, the owners of Kinh-Do Vietnamese restaurant at 1284 Barrington have served their final meal, says Kim Do, the real estate agent for the site. “The business was still doing very well,” says Do, “but Vich and his wife have kids that are all grown up now and have decided it is time to move on.” The business space is now for sale, and while no one has snatched it up yet, Do doesn’t think that will be the case for very long. “It’s a prime piece of real estate in a great section of town,” she says. Odds ’n’ ends
The Bulk Barn outlet at The Village at Bayer’s Road will be closing its doors permanently on September 23. An engineering firm will be taking the store’s place in the strip mall.
