If you’ve spent the last week hungering for more news about the city’s new pet-food cooking classes, feast your eyes here. Said classes are being run jointly by Willow’s Pet Place (1526 Dresden Row), vet Dr. David Evans (of the Chester Basin Animal Hospital), Jude Major (one of the people behind the pet treats from Katie’s Farm Organic Dog Bakery) and Yetty Hutchinson (the local distributor of holistic pet-food line Pets 4 Life). The project kicks off tomorrow with a two-hour info session, starting at 6:30pm in room 1007 of the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building at Dalhousie (6100 University). It costs $10 to attend the session and pre-registration’s required; expect it to be “very school-like---there’s PowerPoint presentations; there’s charts; there’s diagrams,” says Kyra Foster, co-owner of Willow’s. The lecture will cover pet anatomy, the differences between raw and cooked pet food and more. And if somehow you’re cooler than me and have already lined up Friday night plans that don’t involve learning about pet food, you can still sign up for the upcoming hands-on pet-food cooking classes, tentatively scheduled to be held on Wednesdays in March (and possibly April) at The Cookhouse (1512 Dresden Row). (Times, content and number of classes to be decided later, based on input at the lecture.) There are 12 spots available in every class, and each class costs $20 per person. So, why check out the classes, instead of just giving Kitty McFluffington III more dry kibble? The project’s goal is “to help animals with better nutrition,” says Foster. “It always seems to be that the people who incorporate fresh foods and whole foods have much healthier pets...Everything tells me, from just talking to customers over the last couple years, that the less processed the food, the more optimal it seems to be.” You win this round, McFluffington.
