If you're a yoga enthusiast who's spent the last week hyperventilating about the news that lululemon athletica will soon hit Halifax...put those yoga skills to use and calm down. Otherwise, you'll wear yourself out by May. However, you're not alone in your zeal. "We've been asked for years to open ," says Sue Ducros, eastern regional community manager for lululemon. "We're so pleased with the reception that we're getting. I call the caterer, and everybody's excited; I get a taxi, and somebody's wife's heard of it." The first lululemon store opened in Vancouver in 2000; the crazy successful yoga gear and apparel company now boasts over 80 stores in four countries (plus, other retailers carry their swag, too). "The intent of the company is to elevate the world from mediocrity to greatness...through fitness," says Ducros. To accomplish this, in addition to selling you functional, sweet-looking yoga duds, the shop will offer in-store complementary fitness events, run by lululemon ambassadors, every Sunday morning from 9-10am. Ambassadors are members of the local yoga community recruited by the company to advise and teach customers; Halifax's lululemon ambassadors include representatives from both Breathing Space locations and Therapeutic Approach, and local yogi Jody Manley. The store will also have a community board, profiling all the local yoga studios and providing their schedules to the public. "It becomes the hub for community and yoga and fitness and health," says Ducros about the store. And if you're easily startled, watch out: store reps will also be randomly doing yoga throughout the municipality. "We call it guerrilla yoga," shares Ducros. It sounds real scary. Maybe they could call it "spontaneous fun-time park yoga" instead? The store'll open May 16 at the corner of Spring Garden and Birmingham, and will hold grand-opening events all that weekend.
