Let’s hope it’s a sunny tail end of August, as it’s a weekend of planned outdoor events. On August 24 bring family and friends for a local food celebration – Picnic on the hill at Garrison Grounds. Foodies from all over Nova Scotia are promoting the concept of eating what is available from local producers, fisheries and farmers. Select Nova Scotia, the buy local program of Nova Scoita’s Department of Agriculture, has created a province-wide picnic. From Tatamagouche to Liverpool, folks are gathering for an afternoon community feast. In Halifax, the Incredible Picnic is being held at the foot of Citadel Hill from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will also be a petting farm featuring a miniature donkey, goats, lambs, piglets and a rabbit for the kitds.
“I’m hoping the afternoon is a picnic where people can enjoy local food with family and friends. We have this in Halifax with the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market, but it would be nice to sit down together for a community-based food event,” says Jennifer Reynolds, planning and development officer with the NS Department of Agriculture. “We’re going to have a 75 metre picnic table, one big communal table for everyone to sit together. Or you can bring picnic blankets.”
Local Source Market (5783 Charles), the Wooden Monkey (1685 Argyle), Clearwater Lobsters (757 Bedford Highway), the Grainery Food Co-Operative (2385 Agricola), the Maritime Pasty Company and many more shall be on site cooking and selling goods.
”We’ve invited Brent Randall and His Pinecones and Al Tuck to perform,” says Reynolds. “There will be kids activities like face painting and drawing farm animals. I’d like to have some actual animals too, not so much a petting zoo or anything, but just so the kids could see them close-up.”
