“The inspiration was to have a choice for quick and healthy food,” says Burrito Jax (5215 Blowers, 406-0088) owner Gordon Delano. The cozy burrito place, open since July 8, offers burritos done simply with, as Delano puts it, “conventional North American flavours” and basmati rice instead of Mexican, meaning if you don’t like hot spices, you can avoid them (though there are spicy sauces available if you want to go that way). They’re open 10am-10pm Monday to Saturday, 12pm-6pm Sunday, but look for later hours to start up in the coming weeks on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

A new eatery has opened called Pipa Restaurant and Bar (1685 Argyle Street) just beside The Carleton, specializing in Portuguese and Brazilian food.

In the old Athens space comes a new restaurant, The Central Grill (6303 Quinpool), also run by Athens restaurateur Evangelos Panopalis. Expect steak, burgers, fish dishes and other grill staples.

They once were on Blowers, then they went over to Dresden Row, but that didn’t work out for them, so now they’re going back to Blowers. Baan Thai (formerly at 1569 Dresden Row, a space now occupied by Curry Village) is opening soon above I Love Sushi (5232 Blowers). The move was to have happened on June 1 but things often happen slowly in the restaurant industry. Construction allowing, “we are hopeful to open in the first week of August,” says restaurant owner Victor Woo.
