MyBoxBuyer offers an Ikea buying and delivery service

Get stuff from Swedish home furnishing supplier not available online

Posted By on Tue, Feb 28, 2012 at 4:00 AM

MyBoxBuyer is a Nova Scotia business offering a buying and delivery service for Atlantic Canadian residents. You place your Ikea order with MyBoxBuyer and save on shipping and get Ikea products not available online. MyBoxBuyer charges a commission on the pre-tax value of your purchase.

The business was started as a necessity by the owners who, renovating their kitchen, decided to make a roadtrip to the nearest Ikea to purchase items not deliverable. When calculating costs they decided to ask friends if they could collect a few more Ikea orders and kick something extra in for shipping, thereby minimizing their cost. And it worked!

Now they're going again. The next trip begins March 5. They can accept orders after the Feb 28 deadline at a 100 percent deposit depending on space for new orders. They recommended you prepare a shopping list on the Ikea website using the Ottawa location, which happens to be a newly renovated monster-sized warehouse store.

For more information, visit their website or call 229-4631.

Foreign Affair "Now or Never Sale"

Downtown twin fashion boutiques offer big savings on end of season stock

Posted By on Mon, Feb 27, 2012 at 11:55 AM

If you go down to Spring Garden/Barrington today you're in for a big surprise. Foreign Affair (1705 Barrington Street, 429-1407 and 5639 Spring Garden Road, 423-6676) is having a sale, up top 70 percent off the fall and winter stock. The thing is, the spring fashions are coming in and they need the space, so the sale is liable to continue until the space is made. Consider the sportswear, coats and dresses that are on "final markdown" or the premium denim, reduced to $50 per pair of jeans, including the brands Seven, Citizens of Humanity and Hudson.

Scribbles for Sale at Seaport

Scribe raises charitable awareness and funds with letter writing service

Posted By on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 1:09 PM

There's a new and unusual service now available at the Seaport Farmers Market (1209 Marginal Road). Julie Lyons' enterprise is called Scribbles for Sale. "I propose to write custom letters of any nature (i.e. complaint, apology, affection, business, etc.) in the tradition of scribes found in Asia and the Middle East," she explains. "I am partially fluent in German, French and Spanish so can assist non-native English speakers." Her aim is to also raise awareness and funds for the Legacy of Life Foundation (an organ and tissue-donation program). "As a recent heart transplant recipient I want to raise both awareness and funds for education, which I do by selling greeting cards made with work of local artists." Donor forms are available at her table and all profits go to the cause. Look for Lyons at the Seaport Market on Sundays at the table with the heart-shaped balloon.

Rebecca

Jacket jealousy

Posted By on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 4:00 AM

I had my friend Mieks on my mind as I was walking to meet her for an early morning brew (coffee guys, not beer) earlier today. Mieks has a habit of wrapping her scarf around and around—just like Rebecca! So, when I saw this gem PERFECT for youlookfiiine I called it fate and decided to ask Rebecca to stop. Rebecca was on a serious breakfast hunt after a Tuesday night on the town so I made it quick. Her jacket and her Mieks-esque scarf were what caught my eye and of course those scuffed up with love shoes didn’t hurt either. Rebecca is usually a NSCAD student but is enjoying a semester off and likes to shop thrift. That BEAUT of a jacket is from the Salvation Army on Green Street. Seriously.

Chad

Photo finish

Posted By on Fri, Feb 17, 2012 at 4:00 AM

Chad’s style is right up my alley. I snapped this sneaky pic when he was distracted by something picture-worthy. Anyway. I dig this guy's plaid (he loves it—and I KNOW this to be true), beard, toque and desert boots. Y’all KNOW I’m a sucker for a beard. How can you not love a man in an awesome wash denim skinny jean? Chad likes to shop thrift and even scored a wool knit Christian Dior beaut of a jacket for $14.99—I know, I was there and I was JEALOUS. I still am. He likes classic and quality made pieces that lend themselves nicely to the folklore and banjo love this guy’s got going on and I really like him!

Enrique

Pops of colour

Posted By on Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 4:00 AM

Enrique had all of the signs for YLF—corduroys, a pop of colour and Raybans. Y’all know I’m a sucker for them! I caught up with him on his way to work for the Community Culture and Heritage Department—say that fives times fast. Enrique likes to shop "nowhere in particular", just wherever he sees something that catches his eye. His style is inspired by comfort and he was an absolute treat to stop and chat with as we bonded over out mutual decision to wear some pops of red here and there (check his tie).

The Hunt Club closes

Bar/fashion boutique concept disarmed

Posted By on Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 4:00 AM

It was a cool place, and quite original: The Hunt Club ( 5640 Spring Garden Road, beside Bubba Ray's Sports Bar) offered western-styled wear for men and women and was also a bar, just adjacent to the much-larger Bubba Ray's Sports Bar up above Spring Garden Place. But, we're sad to report that The Hunt Club is closing, as confirmed by a staffer at Bubba's.

Madelaine

She's a rainbow

Posted By on Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Madelaine was just the fiiind I was hungry for. The fiiind I’d been waiting for! Madelaine is a student AND A CIRCUS PERFORMER. Colour and whimsy (if you couldn’t tell already) inspire her style and she likes to shop chez Elsie’s. She is also a regular clothing-swap participant where she claims she has found many awesome duds. Madelaine never leaves home without a hat and I can just tell she has a collection of ‘em to choose from.

Ley

Euro zone

Posted By on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 4:00 AM

Ley, Ley, Ley. What a treat he ended up being. I saw Ley from across the street and lucky for me, he was familiar with youlookfiiine! I find this always helps when I am trying to get some dudes up on the blog. Ley’s outfit is from all corners of the world. Okay, one corner: Europe. But still! The jacket and sweater are from Greece, the scarf is from Scotland and the sneaks are from our own local boutique on South Park Street, Fresh Goods. This independent web designer lets Europe inspire his style and buys whatever he likes, wherever he likes. My kinda man.

John

Fuzzy buddy

Posted By on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 4:00 AM

John was a head-turner and certainly worth backtracking a few paces for (check the SWEATER!). Working for the Canadian Cancer Society, John lets his 9-5 do most of the wardrobe shot calling. Business casual is the game, but he let’s comfort and weather-friendly clothing work their way into his wardrobe. His hat is from a little shop in Lunenberg and he likes to shop H&M to impress those high up work execs! I like his beard. I love his beard actually—always been a sucker for them.

ArtPort Gallery provides local art to air travellers

Art at the airport turns out to be a great idea

Posted By on Sun, Feb 12, 2012 at 4:00 AM

ArtPort Gallery is a gallery located at the Robert L. Stanfield International Airport. In operation for seven years, it's owned by Donna Mancini, who runs the place like a co-op; there's always one of the 11 artists represented working at the gallery. Mancini is one of them, offering her multimedia work alongside original watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings and reproductions. "There's a lot of return business" as travellers come and go, explains Mancini, who is happy with how well the business has done through the years. "I'm not in it to make money, but it gives the artists a place to show and sell their work." Open 364 days a year, from 8:30 am to 7pm (8pm in the summer), you can find the ArtPort across from the Air Canada check-in counter.

Splurge moves

Fashion, handbag and jewellery boutique crosses Spring Garden

Posted By on Fri, Feb 10, 2012 at 4:00 AM

As of February 1, Splurge is now in the former Dio Mio location at 1480 Brenton Street (420-9530). Owner Sarah deWolf says there was a couple reasons for the move: the location was nearby and it's twice the size of their spot in Park Lane, allowing for room to grow her stock. Plus, "traffic was down and rent was going up," she says of her former location at the mall, and she also wanted to be free of restrictions to do with what kinds of products she could offer and her opening hours. Plus, her customers advised her to move. "I'm a boutique store, I should be on the street," is what they told deWolf. "I took their advice."
