This morning as I tried to assemble a somewhat appropriate yoga outfit, deciding on bodysuit and Adidas shorts from grade 8, I wondered why someone who has never done yoga would agree to write about a 7 day yoga boot camp for the Coast's Yoga Week blog. Hehe oops
I headed to Happy Turtle Wellness Center for my first Yoga Week — and first ever! — yoga class, with friends Steph and Danika. The studio is located in the strange building beside Mary's Place Cafe on Robie that looks a bit like a Scooby-Doo haunted house, but inside it was bright and clean. We were greeted warmly at the front desk by Krishan Verma, who opened Happy Turtle four months ago with his wife Dr. Bharti Verma. Immediately recognizing us as Yoga Weekers he handed us our YW passports and charged us $5 for the beginner PRO class. (Tip: Bring exact change or credit/debit card.)
There were four other people participating in the class and no one seemed to notice that I wasn't wearing yoga gear or had a borrowed mat. (Tip: If you don't have a yoga mat use a copy of The Coast — kidding, I noticed the studio had extra mats, maybe thats what they're for?) The class started with breathing exercises then moved on to hopping and dancing; it seemed not too serious and ok to giggle, and it was really fun. Krishan then led us through beginner poses for about an hour and a half, emphasizing breathing, balance and a clear mind. It was so relaxing Danika fell asleep on her mat and missed the final pose. Before going I was pretty skeptical about Yoga in general, but I felt a high afterwards and found myself trying to convince my boyfriend to come with me tomorrow (sorry, Andy).
