Stacey Campbell was elbow deep in ice cream when she realized that her downtown Dartmouth sweet spot needed to grow. A busy summer at Sugar Shok (117 Portland Street), and a craving to expand into milkshake territory, pushed her to start hunting for location that was both nearby, and much larger than her current spot.
"When things are supposed to happen they just do," says Campbell. "I kind of put it out there that I was open to moving and one of the building owners approached me and asked if I was interested in the space." The space is 112 Portland Street, where Sugar Shok will re-open in February to double the square footage and a big, bright bay window. That'll leave better display space to showcase local products, room for shopping baskets for all of your goodies and a big bar in the window for milkshake sipping and people watching, she says. Also, it'll be even more colourful (is that possible??).
The new location came up quickly though, meaning Campbell didn't have much time to prepare. Luckily, closing the shop for a month of renovations makes sense at the height of holiday detox—"January's not great for candy," she laughs. "But by Valentine's Day everything's out the window."—but getting a little extra cash together was trickier. That's why she took a chance and launched a crowdfunding campaign to try and help with some costs of uprooting. And so far the results have been overwhelming for her.
"It's really heartwarming to see how people can come together for the overall wow factor of Portland Street," says Campbell. "It indicates the need people are feeling for community."
