Holiday Toast

December 10 at The Khyber Club

Holiday Toast
December 10 at The Khyber Club
It must have been “three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees” on stage when The Jeff Coll Five filled the Khyber dance floor for a xylophone-happy cover of “Burning Down the House” — a sadly appropriate song for the last Holiday Toast. The annual Khyber Arts Society fundraiser is indeed toast. As the Society struggles to stay afloat financially as an artist-run centre (no easy task at the best of times), the decision to close the bar, a favourite venue with an indisputable history, was not easy. But what better way to honour the club’s legacy than with the glorious sight of arty kids dancing! Singing! Drinking! Having good, clean fun! Thanks to the lo-fi goodness of The Jeff Coll Five (the high-school lament “Oh No” stole the show), followed by Death by Nostalgia, who filled the air with keyboards and rhythms, and the club with happy, smiling faces, and the intensity of one-man wonder A/V, no one seemed sad to say goodbye. Now all we can do is hold tight and wait ‘till the party’s over.
