The dual CD release going down Thursday, November 29 is of such magnitude that it may ruin you for the weekend. Defective Perception and Fistfight (Myron Cottreau, guitar; Adam Nelson, drums; Matthew Francis; vocals; Randy Jeddry, bass; Roger Nelson, bass) both plan to unleash their demos with the power of 100 screaming harpies at Gus' Pub, with the help of Black Moor and Vulgus (9:30pm, $2). "It turned out that the Fistfight EP and the Defective Perception demo CD were ready at the same time so we decided to do a double-CD release show," says Jeddry. "Also Fistfight and Defective Perception are of the new breed in the world of metal; both bands will play a show at the drop of a hat. Most metal bands don't want to play too many shows but both Fistfight and Defective Perception can't seem to play enough."
This enthusiasm is becoming more prevalent in Halifax's metal scene—and metal, in general, and so Jeddry says it's time to re-emerge. "For a long time we've been doing things on our own, giving the finger to the rest of the scene, assuming that the rest of the scene was doing the same to us," says Jeddry. "I believe metal in general is more acceptable now. I credit that to the popularity of things like Metalocalypse, Brian Posehn's stand-up comedy, or Metal: A Headbanger's Journey." Fistfight's unconventional sounds have lead them down some prosperous paths: Their recent plans include recording a full-length with Kurt Ballou from Converge in the States this summer. "We knew what we were doing wasn't traditional in anyway," says Cottreau. "We figured no one would get it. We started making massive Sonic Youth-esque noisescapes in the middle of a super-loud and heavy song. To our amazement, even the most loyal (and sometimes stubborn metalheads) commented on how tough and great it was." Here's to experimentation!
