Free Comic Book day is awesome on it's own. But when you throw in a free rock show right inside a comic book store, you are dealing with Iron Man levels of happiness. One of Halifax's premier video game theme cover bands, Nerd Army (James O'Toole, Brad McDougall, Craig Hamlin and Shawn Hunt), are playing a show inside The 2nd Last Gamestore (Clayton Park location) on Saturday, May 3rd at 6pm. "We play songs from various Final Fantasy titles such as FF 7 and FF 5, Konami/Techmo, songs from Contra, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden, old school 8-bit-songs from Kirby, River City Ransom, Monster Party and quite possibly the worst game ever made: Beetlejuice," says Hamlin. "Plus music from Double Dragon 1, 2 and 3." Are the dudes as into comics as they are into gaming? "I have much love for the cult of the comic book," says Hamlin. "I usually read what I can get for free so it usually is popular names like Sandman and Preacher and all that stuff that I have read in the last few years." And “free” is the word on Saturday at comic book stores everywhere, so they are in luck.
UPDATE: If you need to take some of the magic home (and I don't mean Magic: The Gathering cards) Nerd Army will have a limited amount of demos for sale (for $5), that contain nine tracks and include "a cheaply made sticker." (Their words, not mine).
