GIGAS is the solo project of young Nick Iwaskow of Dartmouth. His music is a sweetly kaleidoscopic ‘80s dream, bringing to mind the headier meanderings of My Bloody Valentine and the Psychedelic Furs. For someone who was born in the early ‘90s, he pulls it off alarmingly well. He’s recently teamed up with Steven Earle, and together they bend over keys and synths and Kaoss pads in Iwakow’s basement, coaxing out the lovely sounds that you can hear fragments of at the GIGAS Myspace. (I can’t stop listening to the thuddy alien synths and weird island beat of “All My Friends.”) Iwaskow says he’s hoping to assemble an entire band and release an album in the spring. “We`re aiming to have a darker sound for our next batch of songs while maintaining the tribal-dance kind of feel,” he says. Get buzzed at 1313 Hollis this Saturday, where GIGAS plays alongside Scribbler, Stop Motion Massacre and Hind Legs at 7pm.
