Kinky Kitten Club at The Sex Festival

A play with bite...

With a name like “Kinky Kitten Club”, I naively expected Lee-Anne Poole’s new play about the phone sex industry to be cute and frothy. I imagined a series of vignettes where actor Stephanie MacDonald’s phone chatter is of the “vanilla sex” variety. Well, prepare yourself for something infinitely darker and more disturbing. MacDonald plays an unhappily-pregnant lesbian who turns to phone sex as a “harmless”, lucrative stay-at-home job. The kinks and perversions of her customers can be shocking, disgusting and laugh-out-loud funny, but it is the customer that seems most harmless who proves to have real power over her. This is a workshop production of the play that falls somewhere between a piece of actualized theatre and a short story being told by a really great story teller. But it’s a story that hooks you from the beginning and haunts you when you leave.
