Rosencrantz (Ira Henderson) and Guildenstern (Katie Dorian) are dead funny
Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
is a brilliantly-structured comic re-imagining of Hamlet
from the point of view of the two doomed minor characters. The brainy Guildenstern (Katie Dorian) and the simple Rosencrantz (Ira Henderson) exist in a kind of surreal, dreamlike state as Hamlet
unfolds around them. The world makes little sense to them, and they struggle to find purpose and identity within the framework they are given. Dorian and Henderson have a wonderful chemistry and deliver Stoppard’s complex wordplay with perfect timing. Karen Lizotte is a standout as The Player, the tart-tongued pimp and leader of the traveling band of actors. The characters in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern
may walk, talk and think in circles, but that doesn’t stop this play—and this Lions Den Theatre
production—from hitting its emotional mark. For aren’t we all struggling to find meaning in this tragicomedy called life?
