Today, the one-of-a-kind, musical odyssey that is the OBEY convention announced its full lineup of artists who will be making their way to Halifax at the end of the month.
Amongst the names we’re stoked for is Mary Jane Leach, a composer/performer whose mastery of the acoustical sciences can turn playing with tones into a powerful listening experience.
Cucina Povera hits just as hard but with a million soft feathers, using minimalistic vocals, micro-tonalities and mixing in background recordings of the sounds of everyday life.
With a recently released, internationally acclaimed LP Ultraviolet, Kelly Moran is bringing her talent to the stage, translating for her audiences what it would sound like if her piano has dark, twisted and mystical dreams.
On the other end of the spectrum — when dreams turn into rebellious nightmares — is Guttersnipe, “smothering the Rock idiom in hyper-accelerated bioluminescent hysteria.”
Those looking for more trance in their punk will find solace in the hypnotic, gritty guitar and percussion duo, 75 Dollar Bill, travelling through time from its early days (2013) and space (Brooklyn, NYC) and six years of mixing punk, new classical, psych and street band.
Another power duo, less trancy, more dancy, is Just John x Dom Dias. The Toronto art collective organizer and freeflow rapper in collaboration with DJ/producer Dom Dias and his blends of dancehall, disco and Balie funk, are packing up their 2018 hit Soundboi and getting ready to pack the dance floor from May 30-June 2.
Rounding out the list includes local offerings Frail Hands, who we heralded in last year’s annual New Music Issue as one of the freshest takes on melodic hardcore around, and Zamani—which OBEY calls a “rising R&B force.”
