2010 Canadian National Junior, Youth Championships

When: Feb. 23-27 2010

The Delta Halifax hotel is filled to the brim with young boxers and their families from across Canada, as it's hosting the week's junior and youth national championships all week. Nova Scotia provincial boxing coach Wayne Gordon (of no relation to this writer), took a few minutes out of Tuesday's weigh-ins and medical assessments to tell us that NS has four athletes competing for the National Senior Team and 21 athletes competing in the age groups of 1994-95 and 1992-93 (age groups are calculated by birth years). Of all those athletes, five are female. While these championships are not qualifiers for the Canada Winter Games next year---of which Gordon is also the team coach---it is a step along the way. "This is just a trial run to give our athletes more experience leading into the Canada Games," says Gordon. "We took on this task of hosting this national event of all age groups to better prepare the athletes." If you want to check out any of the final rounds, odds are they'll start Friday and go to Saturday. "Go up to the eighth floor and say I've got 10 bucks, I want to watch the fights," suggests Gordon, and you'll be ring-side ready. –Holly Gordon
